Urgent: Omega cam belt snapped C20NE
« on: 11 August 2012, 17:24:27 »

Good day.

A friend of mine from this forum (vitasik) is currently traveling about 300km to help his dad who snapped a cam belt and asked me to post this thread on his behalf.

Dad's car is an Opel Omega B 2.0 1995 with the older 8 valve engine. In the paperwork it's C20NE.

His question is, does it damage the valves or is it free wheeling?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Sorry for the broken English - it's not my native lanaguage :(

Should be OK, C20NE is "non-interference"

Will be fine.
Renew the cam belt, tensioner and water pump and all will be OK.

I could detect no 'breakages'!

Nothing wrong with that english ;)

As said, the 8V engines are normally ok, even if they are designated as "interference" so I'd just do the biz and stick a new belt on :y

Thank you guys for your swift replies.
Its damaged beyond repair. It did damage one valve, but.... well it probably got dropped for some reason and free of spring it went trough the piston. My father tried to crank it without realizing what has happened. Bits of the piston can be found in all cylinders in the form of swarf. Head is a total loss, engine block might be salvageable. Removing cylinder head in the petrol station at 11:00 pm is not my favorite experience.  I have an offer for a very good running Vectra A ( Cavalier ) engine that is still in the car and can be tested/ driven ( someone run in the back of it).

Main thought/question of the day:

By paperwork engine in the omega is c20ne , but looking through autodata it list it as x20se. Stupidly enough I forgot to check it on the block. I am back home now 300 -ish km from the car. Vectra (cavalier) has c20ne in it.

Previously i did use vectra ecotec 2.0 16v engine in another omega and thread for engine mounts was there to fit omega's mounts. Question is will it be the case with c20ne? And can anyone comment on autodata statement that c20ne was not used in omega, but x20se.

Going to see if my mates sprinter recovery truck is up and running.

Thank you once again. Have a nice weekend.

C20NE, 20SE, 20SEH and X20SE will all fit fine.
The only real difference is the compression ratio's.
