it a light sensor to tell the a/c to regulate the fans for whatever side of the car the sun is on.

Wow did not know that  . Thought it was the remote key detector 

So, oh oracle,  where is the remote sensor ?

It's a radio frequency wotsit key fob on your car - no idea where the gubbins is (driver's side kick panel rings a bell  ). Early cars had an infra red fob with a similar looking red-ish dome up by the sunroof dial.
