I am looking at applying for a job within the company I currently work for. It would be a training course for 2-3 yrs then a really good position/salary.

The issue is, I currently spend £20 a week in fuel for work only. I have a weekly mileage of 60 miles.

If I continue my application and am successfull, my fuel bill would be £100 a week, 80 miles daily.

Mileage would be 400 weekly.

I could not afford this during the training period, nor I think would want to subject this to my car.

I have been told by my superiors that i should not be doing the job I am doing and that they expect me to progress/branch out within the company.

It's a rather global company, what do they want?

What should I do?

I really want to keep a miggy, but TBH, the miggy's economy isn't the greatest, so I have been looking at merc 220 cdi's.

The future prospect of a good job with salary is very important and not to be ignored.  Consider other means of transport for the 3 years for getting to work; public; car share; economical car/bike, anything to get you there on that course!

Mind you I have never done all that. Instead I have just driven an Omega (3 ltr at the time) daily to London and sacrificed all other luxuries (apart from cosmetics, clothes, shoes etc!) .  But it COULD be YOUR answer!

TBH I am at a loss regarding this.

I earn a little above the average salary at the moment, but it just isnt enough, mentally, physically, and I just plain feel I am worth more to the world.

I was in the newspaper business for over 30 years!

Anyway...your problem....I would still go for the new job.  Can you raise any loans, borrow money from relatives, sell anything to give you some funds?  Anyway, doesn't the training salary give you enough for your costs?  If not speak to the company concerned and ask if they can give you any assistance  

I would certainly exhaust all areas before giving up on this great opportunity.

PS Is a merc 220 CDi really the car for you if you are going for this job?  Are  they not thirsty beasts?

I would not be taking a drop in salary, and a c220 cdi auto would be a huge decrease in running costs fuel wise. Even If I had to go for a 2.2 dti manual over my 2.5v6.

Well I think 25mpg at 85mph over 300 miles at 48p a litre isn't bad

Hiya, ask them if they can arrange for some fuel allowance during training, 80 miles a day is a lot of out of pocket, if your superiors really think you should progress within the company it would be in their best interest to "invest" in you whilst training and should be accomodating to the idea.

Ask if they can meet you half way with the costs, that way you are sacrificing something and they will be too.

If the tuition is free would it be worth taking out a loan over 5/7 years, this should pay for your travel expenses plus more over the 3 years training.

find out if you get travelling expenses. tell them as much as you would like to advance you cannot afford to pay for the extra travel to the course.
220 miles a day i was doing and they gave me 28p a mile

Why not a 2.2 DTI omega. I looked in to buying the merc 220CDI when i got rid of my last omega DTI and the feed back i got from people who own them is that they break down lots and in my line of work i dont need that as i do over 60'000 miles a year soi found another omega DTI. If you went down the road of a DTI omega your 400 miles a week would cost about £55 as that is what i am getting out of mine and also the service parts are a lot less to buy

Quite simply I'd LPG convert

I had been looking at getting shot of my v6 and getting a 2.0 or 2.2 auto on gas, but I heard that there is not much difference in economy between the 4cyl and 6 cyl.

I really want to get an auto now, as I have gad problems with my knees for quite a while now. (6'3 and both cruciate ligaments damaged)

I doubt very much that my company would assist with the travel expenses. I had a look at the job posting and it states no reloction costs will be paid. :-/
