Hi all,
You may remember the disastrous run of bad luck we had a month ago, with thefts, falls, heart attacks, etc etc in the family, culminating with the radiators coming on with the hot water.
Someone on here suggested it could be the 3 way motorised valve. After fuses started blowing in the control junction box, it did turn out to be that motorised valve, a very common Honeywell V4073. So thanks for that
The best bit was I got a new one on flea bay for half price to Screwfix etc. Even better was the fact that this version has a separate electric motor, and can be replaced without having to drain down the system.
Having used the manual lever on the old unit confirmed the valve was working, it was the motor that was kaput. It seems this type of fault is very common. So I took off the old motor unit (two screws), put on the new unit, then disconnected the old wiring, wire by wire with the new one (the Honeywell junction box is great, well set out and roomy)....20mins and all running , heating working, water separate. RESULT

Although this is a common fault, it is easily fixed, but as with anything electrical, etc, if you are not sure, then seek professional help

Not wishing to put the dampners on your repair mate changing the head has been known to work, but what usally causes the head to fail is a build of crud either side of the brass 3 port section,which in turn is a result of keeping your heating off all summer then switching it on again at the first sign of autumn setting in,then the little Syncron motor inside head trys to push valve to engage heating and push all the built up crap in the valve. Burns out, but dont beat yourself up as its a common problem on Y plan systems. On a positive note at least you bougth a Honeywell PS what about another meet in  High Wycombe..

Yeah, I usually always change the valve - only time I changed just the motor was when my daft lodger put a wet duvet in airing cupboard, and it poured water all over the motor

It was the microswitch that failed in mine (ACL lifestyle sh1te IIRC). Luckily it's the same one that's used in Omega CL motors so I already had a stock of them.

Appreciate the comments....whether or not it makes a difference, the system was flushed through when we had a new boiler two years ago, and we have a Magnatec fitted which is cleaned regularly So I am hoping the system is relatively clean.

John...as regards Wycombe, I could have had Saturday Sept 8th, but I thought it might be too close to Newent. However, if people say thats ok, then I could still go for it.
Failing that, I'll have to check the Centre's diary

Interesting thread.We realised recently that our rads were coming on with the hot water,despite the c.h. thermostat being set at around 10 degrees.Looks like we may have discovered the cause.

I wish I could figure out how to clean mine without piddling water everywhere The instructions said isolate it and then crack the bleed valve to release the pressure - I did, and water shot into the air.. so I chickened out

Weird....on mine I just turn the taps in the in/out flows to off, unscrew the top and remove it.

In my last house I got fed up with replacing valves and microswitches so I had a closer look for the cause.

The most common wiring layout passes the current to the boiler through the switches on the valve actuator. The boiler I had (Potterton Prima) also drove the circulation pump.

The switches were burning out because they couldn't handle the inductive load so I installed an adaptable box with a couple of industrial 10Amp relays in it to take the load. That fixed it
