Spent the afternoon sorting out the misfire with the help of Murph. Everything seems to be great from the misfire or engine point of view. However the misfire has left a permanent p0300 on the car, which I will clear with a code reader at some point.

Odd thing is that I was waiting at a set of lights, popped the gear into neutral and as the lights went amber, I popped it into drive. As I did so the car might have moved ever so slightly back, not a great deal. Then as I accelerated, the whole car stuttered, like the gearbox was slipping and then jolted into action. Very odd as I have since then driven it quite hard and have had no issues through the gears. Parked on an incline again, pop into neutral, let the car roll back a wee bit, pop into drive and accelerate and again it does the stuttering thing and almost slams into a gear and carries on as though nothing is wrong.

It all seems to have happened since the 0300 has been on permanently.

Whats going on? Any ideas. The lights on the selector are fine. Car has just crossed 30k. And I have never had any gearbox issues!

Hi have you done a level check and when was the last time the fluid was changed?

Does it only happen on an incline? Sounds like there isnt  enough fluid to fill the chamber when on a hill.

Sounds like low ATF in gearbox mate - first port of call as easy to check/rectify

Would seem a reasonable explanation, except if I keep my foot on the brake, it doesn't occur. Its only if I let go and it rolls back slightly. Very odd.

My Carlton 2.6 (same gearbox) did the same when it was low on oil.

Not had this problem myself, but Maria's and other reply makes sense to me.

Check fluid won't hurt, as Masters guide iirc..?

Had exactly this on a 2.5 TD auto. Was fluid level. No ill effects once corrected...

Thanks for the advice, sounds like I need an ATF change. Odd its only just shown up after the EML went on though.

On one of these occasions of slamming into gear, I almost thought I had broken the damn thing, it was so violent. Mechanical sympathy 

Dont think I will be able to change fluid till weekend after. Will it be ok to drive or should I just leave it parked up till I check the fluid level? It doesn't misbehave unless I try and replicate the above scenario.

personally i would check the fuild level and go from there. Its doesnt take long to change the oil 30 mins/ to an hour, its takes longer to get rid of the smell of ATF of your skin and out your hair lol if you were close by i would come do it for you.

Yes. It doesn't take much to trash the clutches in an auto box once it starts to play up.
