There is actualy no test or certificate required to legaly drive a forklift, there is a recognised standard certificate of compitence which is overseen by a private firm.

What you will find is that some organisations have thier own internal training and certification standards and dont even consider the recognised 'certs' as acceptable (which is understandable).

Its all about compitency and your ability to demonstrate it plus, in the event of an accident, that you are able to prove that the compitency had been checked.

As an example, if you came to the heritage centre with a cert you would not be allowed to use any of the forklifts until you had completed out internal course and passed the required exam.  ......and you can get to an approved level without a cert.

I know this is also true of some firms to!

I doubt I would pass, I have a habit of resting my right elbow on the window ledge bit of the door  In a way I support the idea of retesting people. That said it would have to be a fair test with age and experience taken into account.
I would retest younger people more than older people, say Young people every 2 to 3 years upto say 40 years old and then every 5 years up to say 75 years old and then possibly back every 2 to 3 years above 75. But the test for older people would be just basic competency nothing more.


Just as a small criticism of driving tests, if an able bodied person takes a driving test he has to keep both hands on the steering wheel. A person with only one arm obviously does not. My gripe is what is ok for one should be ok for the other should it not ?

True, but if you only have the use of 1 arm, should you be banned from driving?  No. But they have as much control of the vehicle as they are physically able to..

If you have 2 arms/hands then both should be used to control the vehicle.

I've driven all the way from Guildford to Norwich using only the lefthand lane for the entire 190 miles, with the single exception of 100yards of hard shoulder on the M25 when the driver of a car in the middle lane woke up and remembered which lane they were supposed to be in ps it was 2am.
