On that basis JC I would give her one for pretending to be a mezzo-soprano. :-*

Aach - I'd give her more than one if I'd half the chance.

I have to say that, recently, I've been having a bit of a problem with the views of some folk with regard to music, particularly classical.

For me, the bottom line, is whether a performer brings pleasure to listeners. It is an entirely subjective matter.

According to Wiki: Between 1990 and 1996, Jenkins was a member of the Royal School of Church Music Cathedral Singers and passed the St Cecilia Award, the highest RSCM award for female choristers.[6] She was also a member of the National Youth Choir of Wales for three years,[7] won the BBC Radio 2 Welsh Choirgirl of the Year contest (twice), and the BET Welsh Choirgirl of the Year competition. She was also awarded the Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir Scholarship for the most promising young singer. At the age of 17 she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music,[6] where she studied Italian, German, French and Russian, graduating with honours[7] and receiving a music teacher's diploma.

Which, to some, means she's a rubbish singer.  ::) ::) ::) ::)

Importantly, as is the case with many of these so-called "cross-over" singers, she has enhanced the appeal of classical opera singing for the masses and, for me, that is to be both welcomed and encouraged. Without the "glamour" of of these people, classical music would slowly wither.

If I could get rid of the snobbery in this area, I would be highly delighted. If you like her singing, fine. If you don't, fine. But she has every right to sing and does so infinitely better than anyone on this forum.  :y  ;)

I'm beginning to sound like Sir Henry Wood.

Actually, yes, but no-one on this forum, Den.

I have had two forays into the world of concert promoting (hiring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), and have relatively strong views on this subject. I know what the masses want and I know what the purists want. I would dearly love the two to realise that the appreciation of classical music is common ground. It is not about subjectively arguing whether Mozart was better than Rachmaninov...it's about enjoying the timeless quality of classical music, from the simple to the complex.

You should hear Radio 3 folk ranting about Classic FM...it would be hilarious were it not so sad.  ;)

That's fine, Albs. There are singers and musicians that really jar for me, but I have come to learn that if people like a certain type of sound that is fine by me. Furthermore, although I dislike heavy metal, for example, I understand that others like it but, more importantly, I understand that – in their own way – many such heavy metal performers are talented, often very much so.

The same goes for art (and what is music, but an art?). I may prefer Constable's Hay Wain to Edvard Munch's The Scream: indeed I would sooner hang from the lamp post than hang The Scream in my house, but I cannot deny Munch's great talent.  ;)

I don't have problem with the lyrics of the National Anthem; indeed, I think Her Majesty has done a fine job during her reign. However, from a purely musical point of view, I feel that Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 or William Blake's Jerusalem would – musically at any rate – have possibly aged a bit better.  ;)
