what happened to me today.....
« on: 20 April 2008, 13:33:09 »

well took the dogs to the beach today.

one of my dog deisel refuses to go in the sea. so im wearing my issue boots which i dont care if they get wet dragged him in.

my other dog Jester loves the sea and cant get enough of it!

well any how hubby threw the ball for jester and he rushed to get it. 20yrds away from us in the sea. hes never had a problem before. but today he did......... he got disorintated and the dragged away from us with the current. its was horrible to watch you could see him panicin and getting tired. shoutin him both me and hubby, son is screamin to help him. it was spilt seconds but seemed like forever.

so me and hubby look at each other and cos i was already wet i got the short straw i went for a swim. i was in to my boobs before i was even got close to him. the fellas who were fishin at the time were tryin to get their lines in to stop jester gettin tangled up in them.  i eventually got hold of him. you could see the look in his face mummy is saving me.

God i never thought i would have been swimmin in the sea today to save my dog.  :D
Jester wont let me out his sight at the moment he is presently sat in the door way watchin me on the computer. and i bet if i let him come in the lounge he would be at my feet. ;D ;D

I assume you were down at Lee-on-Solent. I tried windsurfing down there many many years ago, & I do reember the floor disappearing quickly.

yeah -- the "shelf" along the coast isn't always that far out -- can be a bit of a surprise !
Anyways -- glad to hear Jester and "Mum" are both safe and now warm and dry !

How can I say this Marie?  You were lucky!

Without sounding like the lecturing dad do you know how, many people get into difficulties in the sea and lakes going after animals/pets?

I used to do a lot of lifesaving reaching national level in competitions, I also used to swim for the north west but even I have a healthy respect for the ocean and undercurrents in rivers etc.

I was in Hawaii recently and went to the North Shore boogie boarding.  There was this kid who was definitely not from the Islands nor was he a strong swimmer.  He couldent even get past the break, on each attempt he got pushed back to the shore.  I went to him and said that he was out of his depth and should go back and try a different beach where the waves are smaller.  He didnt and sure enough he got into trouble although not too seriously - he just played chicken with a rock and lost.  When I got to him I told him I should bloody well leave him there but shaken and sheepish I took pity.

The waves were about 10ft high which is small for the North Coast where they go in excess of 30ft, but I felt as though I was not far from my limit!

Hats off to the big wave riders!  :y

ok i was mad and did not think!

there was planty of people on the beach to help should i have got into trouble. i new i couldnt fully submerge my self otherwise i could have had problems. BUT i couldnt let my dog drown sorry fellas but my dogs are like children to me.

hubby would have gone in but i was already wet so it seamed pointless both of us getting soaked through and we had our son in tow to so he would have paniced with us both in the water.

At least we now know that the current in the solent can be strong and not to throw the ball to far into the sea for Jester.

I'm glad everyone is ok, I know how we felt as we watched our oldest dog Charlie run on to the main road with a speeding car careering towards him...luckily he spotted it just in time and ran off onto the other side of the road to a passing stranger seconds before the car hit him!
