This is why I have a big estate.

This morning we  made a 170mile round trip to Aylesbury to collect an MV6 3.0l engine, manual gearbox, diff(allegedly an LSD), wiring, prop, radiator and exhausts for my Standard12  hot-rod project. We unloaded all of that into the lockup where the car lives and headed home.

I collected the roofbars from the outside bog, along with some rope, ratchet straps and some timber.

Then, we got back into the car and went the other way around the M25 to Arundel to collect the 2 halves of a beach buggy body that a mate had just paid £21 for. After jamming the back half of the body in the boot, and tying the front half onto the roofrack, we drove 95 miles back to the same lockup, and heaved the bits on top of the Standard. I should point out that this garage also has the chassis, wings, bonnet and doors for a 30's Morris 8; a Capri axle and Vitesse front suspension for the Standard; 2 mobility scooters;engine crane, two engine stands and a pile of assorted crap in it. I'm running out of space!

Then we went for a couple of beers and a curry.

It's been quite a fun day, and the Omega did exactly what I bought it for; swallowed all of the heavy, dirty junk and transported it all effortlessly to the destination. It's also done almost 30mpg over the nearly 400 miles I've driven today.

It's a bloody good car.

You can't have mine, it's too useful to get rid of.
And you can't have the Standard, it's a convertible and one of maybe 4 left. The Owners Club are going to hate me. But at least their 1500cc sidevalve cars won't be able to catch my 3.0l V6 one!
You can have the scooter though. If you like.

My 3 litre Elite estate lived a similar hard life as a workhorse. I once thought about selling it but realised for the money it was worth I would rather keep it just for lugging stuff about or towing etc, so parked it up in my mate's yard.

One day fatha decided we were digging up mum's drive and needed a skip, but I volunteered the trusty old Elite to help instead. We loaded it up with lots and lots of concrete rubble and eventually one of the springs snapped. Then I drove to the tip with it on the bump stops and all was well until we got to the speed bumps, at which point it bottomed out and the exhaust snapped at one of the centre boxes. I wish I'd listened to my old dad and got a skip...

It's still earning its keep!

We left Samadet in SW France at 08:00 this morning and 730 effortless miles later, arrived at Calais at 18:30. It didn't miss a beat, my bad back isn't a problem, and even with 3 people, a boot 2/3 full of booze and assorted luggage, plus two bikes on the towbar still managed 28mpg. There is no way I'd have considered that in my previous car, a 1.8 GDI  Legnum. Or my mother's Focus.

I was home by 22:00, about the same time we'd have been leaving Calais if we'd been on the boat that I booked.
