Free Anti-Virus Software
« on: 18 September 2012, 22:03:03 »

Got a couple of fairly old PC's running AVG at the moment, and it seems to be making them run like dogs... Time to bin it I think.

Can anyone recommend a decent AV problem that will protect without slowing them to a crawl?

TIA  :y

what os are you running?
you gould download a registry cleaner, windows just loves to clutter things up in there.

AVG got the reputation for slowing systems down a while back ... seems that "avast free" works pretty well, I use it and have .. so far .. had no problems

I dumped AVG for the same reason

Been running Mircosoft Essentials for a few months now with no problems.

As for Reg Cleaners, your best bet is to just re install windows

very true, a reinstall is the safest, just remember to save your bookmarks and any other stuff you want to a memory stick.

I mostly use MS Security Essentials now, with a weekly run of the freebie Maylwarebytes.

AVG went bloaty, and Avast thought I was breaking the terms of their free licence.

honestly whatever you use, sooner or later you will get some infection or the software itself mess up something.. I have concluded that those companies dont offer good scanner/protector software for free.. :(  tried them all , sooner or later I had to download another for some reason >:(

I use Avast, but Microsoft security essentials is good as well.
I had used Avira and a friend swore by it until it started letting viruses through as it wasn't updated frequently enough
