unmarked plod?

Thread Jack!

What is the official reason for the need of an 'unmarked plod' car?  :-/ If the idea is to reduce accidents etc then surely a big f***off sized Range Rover/X5/etc stuck at the side of the motorway/road in full view of everyone will make people drive on their bestest behaviour. An unmarked car IMHO doesn't actually prevent anything, just catches them doing it & then fines the guilty person/slaps them on the wrist ... maybe  ::).
I saw an umarked Volvo yesterday on the M6 on my way to Lancaster that'd pulled someone over onto one the most dangerous parts of any motorway .... the hard shoulder.

Well, a mate of mine drives an unmarked plod car. (Saw him at the weekend and their last 3.2 Omega is on its' way to pastures new this week :'().

I think the reason that's unmarked is what's in the boot. I.E. not traffic cones. :-X

From a purely traffic perspective I would agree that the more obvious the presence the more value it appears to have. However, I guess from a point of view of catching the read bad eggs rather than just making everyone behave an unmarked car is more effective.

While there are other people better qualified to answer this question, I will give my thoughts.

Unmarked cars are there because some people drive like complete d*cks when they think there are no Police cars around.
I am in full support of the unmarked units because they can catch out these idiots.

A marked Range Rover by the side of the road is great for that small vicinity where it is visible, but like a static speed camera is of no deterrent beyond that.

And if an unmarked unit pullled a car on the hard shoulder it would have been with very good reason. They are acutely aware of how dangerous the hard shoulder is so will have pulled this car becasue it was not safe to let them continue.
How do you know the driver was not p*ssed/stoned and had previously been weaving across the carriageway?

I was pulled over once on a twisty country road, solid white line in the middle late at night, 'because you hesitated slightly at the last traffic ligthts, sir'.   I actually tried driving on a bit to where I knew there was a straight stretch, but they weren't for having it.

Breathalised me (all clear) and let me on my way,  but how stupid to stop someone in such a dangerous place >:(  Fortunately I managed to keep my trap shut though.

Don't think you offended anyone mate but there are many different thinking minds on here. One mans Bacon is another one's tofu. I've sailed a little close to the wind on occasions so am slowly learning!!!
We've got all members on here from Serving Officers to naughty boys & opinions can be divided. Given some of my recent oubursts i've undertaken to stop ranting, hence playing Devils advocate now.
