Tyres, which make?
« on: 30 September 2012, 21:16:35 »

I had a few problems with wishbones, geo etc and my tyres are a bit buggered, I have P7s on at the moment (a bit cone shaped now!) and was thinking of replacing them. What makes do you recommend and is it worth going for second hand?

No to second hand, it's not worth it :y

As for the other question, I'll just grab the popcorn.....

Size/engine/driving style/budget may help to filter suggestions offered :y

...shut it you! ;D

Falkens are shite, on omega, just in case anyone doesn't know yet.

Iirc (this is a lie, I had to check your post history) there's an outstanding question on the set up since the last work on the suspension...?

But as long as your happy with the car and the set up;

...er, well it depends what you call a good tyre?
Cheap?
Sport?
Low wear?
Quiet?
Stable?

Michelin primacy, last for silly miles if driven sensibly. Poor lateral grip.

I use conti sc3, bit noisy, good grip v wear. Fairly stable. Expensive.
TB uses sport max tt, high grip high wear high price, very planted and stable. Noisy.

Mid range Kumho ku31/39 reasonable mid range tyre. Less grippy than above.

...actually, most of those are obsolete now. :-[ ;D

Amyway, you get the idea. What sort of driver are you? Miss Daisy, Joe Bloggs or Ken Block?

Ps, second hand do have a use. If your still having set up issues for instance...?
And also if new suspension fitted, it's best to leave set up, and hence New tyres, until the new suspension has settled. At least a couple of weeks if possible.

Hopefully that's of more help than those other jokers above? ;D

Best idea would be to stick to the brand and type fitted by the manufacturer.
I tend to use either Dunlop Sport contacts or Michelin Primacy Pilots and both hold extremely well when pushed hard around corners and bends. Stay away from the comedy brands cos they will let you down one way or another. :y

As chrisgixer says, part worns have a use. There are times when we have to buy tyres when we were not budgetting to, etc.

However, I still maintain that always using part worn is false economy (ignoring any other issues present with part worns - worn in on a different setup, potential for non-visible damage following an accident, etc).  Most part-worns are around 5mm, which is well over half worn (new tyres usually 9mm, completely spent at 2mm, recommended to change at 3mm for ability to disperse water).

I too am replacing suspension as my tyres are nearly down to the metal on the inside shoulders .....The ones on the back still with plenty on them ( and the worn out front ones) are Avon ZV5

Is it worth getting the same again on the front?????

Or is there another recommended make?
