excessive carbon/oil buildup, Cylinder 5 ONLY
« on: 01 October 2012, 00:37:49 »

In the middle of a Head Gasket Replacement on a 99 Cadillac Catera X30XE 3.0 V6 and I noticed a good bit of oil on the intake manifold on the intake for Cylinder 5.

Removed the spark-plugs and sure enough, cylinder 5 was completely black with oil.

Removed the heads and all the rest looked pretty normal except cylinder 5 was completely covered in carbon.

I know this could be caused by bad piston rings but I'm trying to eliminate all other options before I pull the engine. I know this could also be caused by bad PCV.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any insight/suggestions? Thanks.

Valve stem seals, perhaps?

Was the compression OK on that pot before it was stripped?
