got a 4 week job in portugal nice villa right on a golf course ( dont bloody play) got to drive there with materials etc so that will be a long one 3,000 round trip

wifeys coming out for last  week for a holiday then a slow drive back through spain for a week

just a shame it will be november or may have to be put it back until january due to current comitments

anybody know any good spanish stop offs for the journey home

Where is the work. Southern Portugal or further north maybe Oporto way?

I will unearth some hotel/secure parking recommendations in the North of Spain if you like in a day or two (somewhere between Burgos and St Sebastion might be appropriate) We drive it in a day from the Midlands to the Costa del Sol but not in a van! When we used to stop it was around the French/Spanish border at St Sebastion

depending on time i was hoping to spend at least 7 days travelling back through spain just to really see a bit of the country and the odd seaside ressort. me and wifey dont mind something a bit lively as well as something quite and inland.

van could do with secure parking as it will be full of tools its a lwb high roof movano so not the easiest thing to park

I drove to Lisbon and back once, going out I went via Madrid and coming back I went via Salamanca and Valladolid.  If I remember rightly it was quicker and easier via Madrid, but a much nicer drive coming back!  The truckstops in Spain often have cheap and cheerful hotels!

Oooo Yes just remembered a good stop! Smallish town called Alencon just north of Le Mans in France.  There's a Mercure hotel there which is OK, but the restaurant next door is fab!! It's a small steak house and everything is cooked on a huge open fire in the restaurant and the menu is steak! jacket potato from the fire, green beans and a selection of sauces for the steak!! Yum!!! Highly recommended!!

Wow, about as far South West as you can go.!

The place I was trying to remember is in Northern Spain, in Lerma near Burgos.  Here is the link. http://www.hotelalisa.com/lerma%28i%29.html The parking is underground so not sure of height clearance on your vehicle. However if it was of interest to you most hotels in Iberia speak some form of English or better you could drop them an Email with your request for max vehicle height - it will be in Metric of course.

Two other thoughts are to stay in one or more of the state run hotels. They are always nice places (former monastries, castle and the like) for a bit of luxury. In Portugal they are called Pousadas ( here is their website http://www.pousadasofportugal.com/?gclid=CNbpzOan_rICFRPLtAod4HcA-A) The equivalent in Spain is the parador ( here is their website on the page for Zafra- we stayed there a few years back and had a superb room . http://www.parador.es/en/cargarFichaParador.do?parador=092&LANG=en&SM=true&fechaDesde=&fechaHasta=&codigoIdiomaOrigen=es)

You will find the driving very easy compared to Britain except in built up areas off motorways and main roads.

wow some nice places there will need to get my thinking cap on or maybe spend 2 weeks travelling home, shame wifey cant have more time off, thanks for the advice meeting the client again next week so will hopefully know if its November or January which will help

Best of luck with the job, I'm glad work is picking up. Since 2008 it has been tough, but I'm finding things are beginning to pick up at last.
