Oil from gasket and in plenum
« on: 15 October 2012, 09:56:35 »

Hi guys,

I just wanted to check before taking everything apart.

I've replaced the n/s rocker cover and gasket and I just can't get a seal. I've taken it off and resealed again but it still squirts. It appears to be coming from the corner near the strut and coming forwards a bit and not from the half moons. Also it is only this corner and nowhere else, and only the n/s as I've replaced both sides with genuine. I've checked the tubes going to the plastic on the plenum and they have new oil in them but they are clear otherwise. Also the plenum has a thin coating of oil in it which is now making it slightly harder to start after sitting for a weekend in the cold.

Is this likely to be the silver box at the back o/s or what else can I look for please?

TIA

In relation to the cam cover, you've checked that the gasket is fitted into the recess ok, everything set to correct torque and that there's nothing trapped? Then I'd be checking it for damage or to see if its warped, if the leak is continually in the same place. N/S is the awkward one too, typical!

Have you cleaned out the small hole in the little brass pipe in the breather box (silver box at the back o/s) ?
If not it needs doing to prevent the excess pressure which causes the gaskets to leak. I doubt that alone though would cause a new gasket to leak straight after fitting.Have you tightened the bolts down to 8nm only ? Its very important to do that to prevent any problems.
Warped or cracked cover is possible, but other possibilties are more likely and need to be checked first. :y

I've stuck a feeler gauge between rocker cover and the block and there's no lift anywhere around it so I'm slightly confident there's no warping. When I had the cover of I also checked it on a perfectly flat surface with a torch inside and couldn't see any light so it should be flat. I really wish I hadn't done any work on it because originally it was the o/s that was leaking and I got that fixed and I thought it a good idea to do both sides but now the n/s leaks, but only from the one place. Which is very very frustrating.
The main thing that concerns me is oil in the plenum but I must admit I can't remember if it was the big Y tube or the other two. I think it was the Y tube. I'll check tomorrow.
When I first changed the gaskets I was dumb and used pattern parts which leaked like hell and although I replaced them with genuine which fixed the o/s perfectly and stopped the n/s filling up the spark wells I've had this leak ever since.

I'm mostly concerned about the oil going in to the plenum in case it does something funky and damage anything.

TIA

Oil in the plenum is normal. The purpose of the breather system is to vent crank case pressure from cumbustion blow by gases into the inlet tract of the engine, so that the oil vapour and fumes are burnt by the engine and cleaned by the cats etc
So there will be some oil residue in the plenum and inlet. It's quite common to see oil in and behind the throttle body. So it's safe to say your breather system is working. Or at least partially.
If your worried the oil is excessive post some pics, maybe?

As for the oil leak, cam cove has got to come off and be re fitted IMO. If the seals not damaged you should be able to re use it, just be Carefull removing the cover as parts of the seal will stick to the head if the correct goo was used. Although are you sure it's not coming from the oil filler neck seal to cam cover...?

Re starting, the oil is not related. check for codes via pedal trick or paper clip test.

I've been getting 19 - Incorrect RPM sensor but only since the leak on that side of the engine. I wanted to get the oil leak sorted as this is going over the crankshaft position sensor (I think) and I didn't want to have to clean the area up only to have it oiled again straight away. Originally it was blubbing oil out but now it's squirting it onto the bodywork at the back and side.

As for symptoms it only occassionally doesn't start first time, only if it has been standing for a couple of days otherwise it starts fine. No lack of power and it is very responsive, plus I don't want to have to fork out for a new sensor if I can help it.

TIA

Hi Guys,

I'm going to replace the rocker cover again and see if that helps. Fingers crossed.

TIA
