2.5TD essay, a question and a request
« on: 15 October 2012, 20:10:14 »

 ;D
Hi Guys,

well as many know i have a soft spot for the old m51 diesel motor,
well now im questioning how competent vauxhall are!!
now its known i always chip mine for the performance and economy benefits,
really wakes them up, but as some may remember , did loads of experimenting
on my old one, and eventually it was pulling silly amounts of boost and producing
large amounts of power, but it was never what i call a happy engine,SO
it was detuned for normal driving,

now then fast forward to recently aquired p38 range rover diesel manual,
Tb saw it at the abs meet, got it for next to no money,
owing to an airbag fault which was solved very quickly where it flew through
 the mot,
then as standard practice for me a complete service including greasing,
fluids and filters, etc etc, used it for a couple of weeks in uk,(600miles) before
setting off for spain at one in the afternoon on wednesday, tank reading
just under 3/4 full onto chunnel
arrive france 5.30, punch no tolls into sat nav, and off we go,
now its strange but i hadnt booted it before, so first time i did in 2nd gear
it bounced off the rev limiter, pulling like a berserk husky team,
swiftly followed by 3rd again rev limiter whilst pulling like billyo,
then 4th and yep pulling like stink hit the rev limiter!
didnt try it in 5th as i was already doing over 70mph, so get to just outside
reims spot a fuel station at 1.27euro a litre, brim the tank, and off we go again,
travelling steady over night, san sebastion comes and goes, finaly filled up agan
around 100miles into spain,at 135euro per litre, all the way across spain and landed
at my house at 1930 thursday evening, with a range of 138 miles remaining in the tank,
total distance was 1,489 miles in 26 hours,
stepped out of car fresh as a daisy, hug wife, wash up and down the bar!

wont bore you with the small details of kamikazi
french and spanish drivers,etc

but here is the point of this rather long essay,

2.5 m51 bmw diesel engine, purportedly producing 137bhp, almost identical to the omega?
ony difference i can see is a bigger intercooler, huge sump capacity(9.5litre)hence
longer oil change intervals,
bigger radiator, and the pump is slightly different,
the thing weighs as much as a small house, was loaded wth tons of gear
including the front seat, was literally no room for anything else(took us 2 days to get it all
out and stashed away)its got a huge flywheel to which is bolted the gearbox and transfer
box fultime 4 wheel drive, etc etc,
then how come it did the trip quicker than in the omega,s
(it beat my best time in the omega by 2hours 45 mins)

used about the same fuel, talking of which, would anyone like to guess the mpg?.....
must confess the omega was a little better though,

brim to brim method was used to check the computer readout, they differed by 0.2
now if rangerover can make this engine perform like it should, what the hell did vauxhall
do to stuff it up so bad?
honestly if you drove it you would never believe they are the same engine!

questions? discuss? why?????
now the request, if this works will be coming back to uk to buy more of them!!
so if anyone sees cheap p38 2.5 diesel range rovers near them, let me know!!
as long as they have a bit of tax , mot not to bothered about but would be nice,
body condition not a problem, dont care about colour, long as it drives that will do!!

Bigger intercooler and different pump.......so not much difference then!

I have always wondered if connecting the waste gate vac to the inlet might help overcome some of the intercooler restrictions

Vauxhall 2.5TD is 120bhp, which is why its a dog.

Rangie, being part of BMW at the time, got the full whack (150ish, IIRC), and a bigger intercooler.

I also think at "below instant ban" speeds, the Rangie carries its speed better, not sure if its the softer suspension, or the fact you're higher. Or maybe because the Omega has armchairs, Range Rover has the entire sofa ;D

Reckon the intercooler has a lot to do with the better performance, coupled with the larger grill to feed it cold air.
