I had a 1978 3500 SD1 manual about 12 years ago. Performance wise it wasn't a patch on my previous P6 3500S. The P6 would smoke it's wheels in 2nd gear on a dry road. It was multi-coloured due to the ease of changing body panels-all wings could be removed in 20mins. Wish I'd kept it (the P6 that is-although should have kept the SD1 as well.)

Had a MK1 3500 manual once,a mate had the auto version, top gear in auto was the same as 4th in the 5speed manual,so mine cruised a lot easier than his did. Also had a MK2 2000 manual which was a lot better car than people give it credit for!P6 had rear seats shaped more for 2 people than a "proper"bench seat for 3,and the boot space was lousy on them unless you went for the bootlid mounted spare wheel[I had a series 2 2200sc]

Personally I always liked the TP Vitesse SD1's.

I owned a Moonraker Blue twin plenum 3.5 Vitesse for about six years back in the day.  :y It was quite advanced for its time with the on-board ten digit 'computor' with stopwatch/ETA etc. You could type in the distance of a journey and it gave you an ETA, and you then began the challenge of trying to beat that time.  ;D ;D SWMBO hated it from day one to the day I sold it.  ::)
Cheered her up no end when it failed the MOT due to excess play in the steering rack and I had to px it as the cost of a replacement rack was not financially economical.  :'( :'(
Door skins separated at the botton due to rust from poor drainage. Two guys where I work have lovingly restored Vitesse SD1's and they look quite small to how I remember them.  :-\

Sadly the only way to turn a Rover V8 into a roaring beast is to fit a small blcok chevvy!

Brings back fond memories, I had a 3.5 Vanden Plas (sadly not efi) as my first big car and first V8 when my mates were driving stuff like mk3 Escorts and Renault 9s. Obviously I really wanted a Vitesse but couldn't afford one even if I could find one back then.
