Intercom system advice sought
« on: 30 October 2012, 21:52:35 »

Now our loft conversion is nearly done, I realised I have overlooked something... ::)

With the necessary fire-proof doors in place, you have to really raise your voice if, say, your in the the kitchen and you want to call a family member in the new top floor. So, an intercom would be handy. I would prefer to have a wireless system. A wired system would have been a doddle to install during the building works, but not so easy (though not impossible) now.
Does anyone have any tips on intercom systems?

I have been looking at this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMMAX-WI-3SN-Home-and-Office-Wire-Free-Intercom-System-/300696418995

but I do not understand this bit:

"It communicate by PLC without additional wiring"

Huh??  ???

I'll take a stab at "Power Line Communications". i.e. it transmits a carrier over the mains wiring, modulated with voice.

So, not wireless as such. Needs mains at both ends.

As to whether it'll work, you pays your money.. Buy it online and distance selling regs are on your side if it's pants. :y

I can do you a kit if you want ::)

Or DIY take 2 tin cans and a length of string to suit, drill a small hole in the end of each can, thread the string through, tie a double not to stop it pulling through.  Route the string from one area to the other and tie off at the other end.  All you need to to is keep the string taught to communicate.

Alternative method you will require the following parts from ebay.

121000466456

200836246351

I personally prefer the 2nd option.  :-X

A normal 2 set telephone. Only one needs telephone connection. An intercom is built in normally

for example http://www.adverts.ie/phone-fax/eircom-5010-siemens-digital-cordless-telephone-set/1832216

An 'Extercom system' is much cheaper and simpler than the advice these jokers are giving you Nick!  ::)

As the name suggests it's an External Communications system and all you have to do is keep the windows open and when you need to summon Mrs Bat or a minor Bat, stick your head out of the window and shout!!!  :)

You can even use it to communicate with the neighbours as most Extercom systems are compatible in this country and as soon as you start using yours, you can be sure that they'll let you know that they have one too!!  ;)
