MV6 just cut out . . help please
« on: 12 November 2012, 19:30:03 »

Hi All,
           got the new 2.6 MV6 on saturday , drove home 60 odd miles , it ran like a dream . :y :y

Sunday started cleaning it up etc. moved it about a few times it always started 1st time  :y :y

tonight (monday ) car has been on drive all day , went out & it started 1st time  :y :y

Drove about a mile & it just completly cut out  . .  dead . . . all lights were still on as were the dash lights . All of the warning lights came on as if you had just turned the ignition  on but not started the car . :'( :'(

Tried to re start but nothing , engine turning over fine but would not start. :( :(

Left it for about 2 mins & tried again  . . engine hesitantly started but would not respond to the throttle .>It would only rev to 1200 RPM

Orange TC light was on & the white "snowflake" button next to the gear selector was lit .  :-\ :-\

Was able to move the car to a safe position but at a slow speed  (only 1200rpm)

Switched off & left it for 5mins & it started as per normal with full throttle reponse & reving freely  :y :y :y

No warning lights on  (TC had gone off as well)

So drove back home   :y :y  no probs  car was running great again . :y

Not done pedal trick as yet  but

Thinking possible crank sensor  . . .  any thoughts or suggestions  . . .  car has done 125k  but no mention of a crank sensor replacement in the service history

Just thought :( :(  . . . yesterdays clean up involved cleaning up engine bay area .  possibly disterbed or moved something maybe ? :-\ :-\

From what I have heard on here in the past, your symptoms do point a  playing up crank sensor.

Others will know doubt give further advice. :y

Can you do a "pedal trick" to read codes - instructions in Maintenece Guides (sticky at top is the index to that section).

Initial thoughts are crank sensor. But lets get the proof before changing parts on a hunch :y

ok TB   tried pedal trick . This is what i've got  (i think)  0560      0340    0334    0560     0220

just noticed 0560 is there twice? :-\. .  is that usual ?   or shall i have a recount.

Double checked with a second pair of eyes correct codes are :  0560      0340    0330    0560    0230

hi all , still trying to get to the bottom of this breakdown

Are the  fault codes stored in order as they appear .  First code is 0560  & last is 0230 (fuel pump problem).

so would the 0230 have been the last fault to have occured or does it not work like that ?

Am only asking as when I got  the car re started it seemed if as it was a fuel starvation problem not allowing it to rev past 1200rpm .

Does  a faulty crank sensor usually  mean car does not start or can it cause the engine to "just cut out " whilst driving ?

Started the car 6 times over 3 hours on the drive last night  . . all first time starts   & car started on the button again this morning

hope this makes sense  :-\ :-\ :-\      TIA     Al :y

Faulty sensor will cause it to refuse to fire up and start and will also mean it can cut out at anytime while driving. However,Im not aware of a dodgy crank sensor restricting revs to 1200,so perhaps that and the fact you have a fuel pump related code suggest you have an intermittent fuel pump problem ?
Im far from an expert though Al, so hopefully someone more knowledgable will be able to shed some more light on your problem. :y

Had this on the 2.6 Estate and Vx dealer changed crank sensor - still stalling and difficult to start.  Despite what others say on OOF, the Vx dealer changed cam sensor and this completely cured the problem (repairs carried out by Vx dealer under warranty 12 months ago)

You might need to get the codes reset Al, so that there are no old stored codes.
Just as you've mentioned the fuel issue from before.
Then all showing codes will be 'relevant'.

Thanks dbug , noted .  Is the cam sensor wiring connector or connectors in the engine bay ? as I was cleaning it all out in there on Sunday & "cut out" occured 1st time I drove the car after on Monday . Thinking i may have pulled or partialy pulled a connector apart.

But  it's the 1200 max  rpm after the start up thats seems strange . This only happened the once after the "complete cut out"  happened .

Car now starts 1st time everytime .   Also what would the 0230 fuel pump code point to then ?

TIA   Al :y

Al, I'll make sure I have a code reader with me next time I'm down that way (could be Friday pm/sat am) if that's any help?

Have I got your number? :-\
