PC Stuff
« on: 23 November 2012, 12:48:01 »

Hi all,
I haven`t been able to get my wifi working for a while, used my 2 lap tops on it for a few years without any problems , and then suddenly stopped working, ( both lap tops work ok with my 3 dongle),For a while I just wired directly from the modem to which ever lap top I needed, to be able to use them on a daily basis..
Right ...so I have finally bought another router ( Belkin) same type as the other.
Is there anything special I need to do to set it back up again, or do I literally just plug the modem lead into it and put the power lead back on.
Dont want to "blow" anything straight from the start. :)
cheers..

Power it on and via a wired connection browse to the router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254) and run the router config to enter your ISP login details, set the security etc.  :y

Good luck!

So you get the new router, you will need to connect directly to your computer. Use network cable, which should be supplied.

Using your browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome ect)

Instead of www.whatever in the address bar, put in the address of the router usually (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) but double check the book to see what it is.

You then need to set up your internet account details.

However as I've been typing this, I'm wondering if your old router was at fault or have you just lost internet connection.

When you say "WiFi" working, does that mean internet or connections between you computers?

Did they actually connect to your old router? Just no internet?

Hi Tunnie, connected the "old" router back up the other day, clicked onto the icon at the bottom of the screen to "connect to a network" my set ups name was showing on there, clicked on that to connect, but nothing happens, although on that screen it was showing a good strength signal / bar reading, on my lap top it just shows "Local only"
I`m not really bothered about getting "wireless" on both laps tops.only originally set it up on 1 and it was a bonus when I found I could use it on both

thanks

You can have up to 253 devices (wired or wireless) hanging from a single domestic router, go back to Tunnie's fault finding chart and go from there.

If running Win7, but not with SP1, install SP1, then delete all the 6to4 tunnel adapters
