EU Budget talks fail to reach agreement.
« on: 23 November 2012, 16:13:40 »

Why am I not surprised.

17 poor countries , who will be net recipients, want more money.

Spain , a country that has always been a net recipient (gets more than it pays) is now faced with paying more than it receives and losing 17% of its agricultural subsidies. How will Rajoy explain that to his people in crisis?

Britain, wants to have no increase in EU budget which seems fair at a time of austerity

Some rich countries want their agricultural subsidies increasing.

Germany thinks Britain is scuppering the talks.

Cyprus is the fifth EU member to ask for a bailout with all its hideous Troika clauses

The EU officials don't give a damn as their pay and pensions keep rising and failure of these talks just means yet another beanfeast  summit next month with nice hotels and fat expenses.

You have to laugh except it is serious :o :o

It is all getting so much worse for the EU and the Euro!

The sooner the German's and the French get a grip and realise the Euro is as good as finished the better, with all being finally scrapped.  Then perhaps Greece and Spain, just to start with, can be given back power that in effect has been taken away from them by the Germans in particular.

If the UK stays in the EU, then our leaders MUST seek new terms and conditions. ;)

I now note that Cyprus is in financial trouble and has obtained a bailout from international financiers .

This is due to it's exposure to the Greek financial crisis!

So the snowball is starting to pick up speed with 5 EU countries now seeking help ::) ::)

the Greek part of west Cyprus, as east belongs to Turkish..  they divide the island and take half of it to EU and then expect the other parts to follow what they dictate.. they will wait forever :D

by the way I dont understand something.. why they ask for a bailout.. they are enough rich  ???

Cem ... whether you like it or not, the Cypriot banks took on huge amounts of Greek debt when this crisis first started, now Greece can't pay those debts back, the banks are in deep doodoo, so they need money from the IMF. You may think the Greek side of Cyprus is rich, perhaps some parts are .. but a lot of it is built on debt ..... and Cyprus owes Russia a rather large amount as well !!

And as a small correction .... "they divide the island" is not quite true ... If my memory serves it was Turkey who invaded Cyprus in the early 70's, and caused me to be shot at for the first time in my life .... not something I enjoyed overmuch......    :(

If I am not much mistaken that is one of a number of reasons why the EU cannot accept Turkey as a member. :(

Until Greece and Turkey sort out their differences then that situation will remain. ::) ::)

sorry you were shot Entwood..  :(

however, I have to tell that both Greek and Turkish were living together until EOKA decide to kill civil people and children in their home.. where west didnt even move a finger when these things happen..  :(  and these events happen for a long time until Turkey decided to do an operation..

aside from historical events, west part of cyprus is really rich and I mean it.. if they go in trouble and open credit for Greece, its their decision.. so eventually they will pay for the consequences .. not another someone..

when I said they divide, I mean that European union only took half of the island and accept the Greek part as repesenter of Cyprus .. And we warn them that this will divide the island forever and no agreement will take place as Greeks will refuse both Turkeys and Turkish parts being a member to EU.. if thats the result case, well be it..

many people like me refuse to be a member of EU anyway..  :y

If my memory serves me correctly it a was new constitution imposed and a power garb by Archbishop Marcos that caused the crisis, where he wanted to marginalize Turkish rights and interests.

When they first got independence, the Greeks and Turks both had representation in Government, but a Greek takeover agenda under Marcos, soured, divided and segregated the country where there were attacks by both side against each other.

A weak Labour government lead by Wilson were meant to be the guarantors of the Greek / Turkish power sharing agreement, but Wilson in his normal preferred stance of keeping his head firmly stuck up his butt and his stance did not change in trying to prevent the Turkish invasion or sorting out the resultant mess, where early intervention and a more assertive proactive approach by the UK may have been averted the resultant mess.

The result has not been good for either side, especially the Turks where the north has been starved of any inward investment from any country apart from Turkey.

yep.. Makarios who started the whole mess.. but the attacks were first started by EOKA  .. and thats a very important point..

and for the Turkish invasion, it was well prepared and sudden , even USA was a sleep ;D

Apart from their pay and pensions keeping rising, they're still spending a small fortune every year flitting between Brussels and Strasbourg and returning after a few weeks.
