Rocker Cover gaskets
« on: 24 November 2012, 12:17:46 »

Hi guys,
just came aboard last night. I have just sourced replacement covers and noticed in the shop on here that there were gaskets for sale (but now says Sold Out). Anyone know if these are still available from here? Would sooner give my hard earned to someone from this site than to GM.
Thanks in advance.

For cam cover gaskets OOF from years of experience, recommends genuine only to be used along with the correct sealant.

Pattern gaskets do not last, they will be more expensive in the long run as you will be replacing the much sooner than GM, in some cases, just weeks  :y

I was always gonna buy only genuine GM ones but just wondered if the ones that are advertised in the shop on here are still available?

Does anywhere on-line sell the genuine gaskets? I need to do the estates' gaskets soon, and the local dealer is a 40 mile round trip away.

Also - is this the right sealant?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280562452759?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Thanks guys/gals.

Hi Shiny, and welcome.

Sadly the supply for gaskets dried up a good while ago. TheBoy will advise, but I doubt there's any supply due any time soon.

As you say, genuine only, and cheaper on trade club. If your not a member, andyc can help with trade club prices via his dealership. Find him in The recommended section, pm via profile. :y

Hi when you do them make sure you clean out all the emmision and breather tubes and parts because most of the cases they start to blow is because it is all gummed up, if you don't do it chances are you will be doing them again soon.

Its unlikely we will be getting any more in soon.

As others have said, try andyc, he normally does a very good deal on these :y

Why did you have to source new covers? Are yours damaged, etc or were you advised by someone to change them?

Good point. Old ones very rarely fail.

For this job, I'd only recommend genuine GM parts, and from a dealer.

There are so many places selling pattern parts as genuine, because that pattern supplier may supply GM with a washer or something daft - Autovaux being a well known company using these tactics.

PM andyc for excellent prices on mail order genuine parts - he works in the part dept of a dealer.

I was advised by the local Vauxhall dealership that the ones that are on are probably warped and I should get new ones, which they wanted £120 a side for. With hindsight now I should have realised that just a gasket change would do the job.
Anyway I have covers coming from Steve at omegaspareparts and if the ones on aren't warped then I have a spare set  :)

They only warp if a hamfisted mechanic has ignored the 8nm torque figure. A fellow local OOFer had a warped one recently and I sold him a good one for £15. So no need to pay £120  each for new ones,as used ones will usually be perfectly useable.
Always best to check the mating faces with a straight edge though ,just in case. :y
