Connecting via wifi or cable?

Both .. no difference over the weekend, although today has been better, very few drop outs, but still some oddities ... :(

First time I go to a site, even OOF, it takes about 30 seconds to fully load the page, but thereafter it is as quick as it should be on a page change or refresh, same happens on virtually every site.

Matters not which browser, IE, Firefox, Chrome all do the same, and I've disabled all the browser add-ons I can find. Even tried it with the antivirus disabled.

Laptop does exactly the same, so I've discounted software and computer hardware, and went for the sequenced connection hardware .... the only common thing left is the router ..... :(

I dont suppose the router is set to drop the connection after a period of idle time?  :-\
Make sure the timeout is set to 0.

Would explain my highlighted bit.......

Sounds like a slow DNS  to me.

EDIT: Or.. is the router configured to drop the ADSL connection after a period of idle? Set it to "Always on" perhaps?

Need to see the router logs, as Hornby suggests, to see if its dropping or excessively retraining.

Most tinpot ISPs are struggling with DNS bue to a massive explosion in queries - partly due to growth, partly due to shite routers not using primary/secondary, but send in parallel. Gee, thanks, Netgear, Hauwei and Technicolor.  My DNS platform hit a regular daily peak of over 500,000 queries a second late Spring.

Router logs say nowt useful IMHO .. a whole load of data when the router is first switched on - which includes 4 attempts at getting a domain  - then blank.

Interesting, in the last couple of hours I've been having a deeper play, which involved a fair bit of furniture moving... got the PC and router near enough the master socket that I could connect everything up directly, no extensions whatsoever ..... and when I connected via network cable it went all odd .... I can connect to the router but no internet connection at all - go to wireless and I can connect to both router and internet.

Spoken to ISP - TalkTalk - who have looked at their logs and confirmed that BB is dropping out at frequent intervals. They are now conducting line checks and will call me back tomorrow, but the guy "thinks" it is possibly "the weather" - wet in a box somewhere - and/or a router that is on its way out.

We await the call :)

Sorry TB, can't answer that now .. it's all back in its normal places and I'm back on wifi.... oddly .. since they ran the circuit tests .. and I watched all the router lights go ballistic as they did it .. it's been pretty stable .....  be interesting what tomorrows call says .. :)

Go to google and type in 'public ip address' and it will tell you.

Can then look to see if there is packet loss.

Just checked the logs, and suddenly after 40 minutes the packet loss dropped to zero and has stayed there .... I wonder if they've done something at their end ....   :)
