Recently, whilst driving through a village near a school, doing 50 kmh as was the limit, I spotted a camera being pointed at me. I got pulled in.

I then was read a little poem by a 8-9 year old girl who was standing with the policeman. She gave me a picture she had drawn and a chocolate. I felt it inappropriate to mention that I was taught not to take sweets from strangers, however. 

The initiative was a Police / school collaboration to show the kids the dangers of the road whilst showing motorists the importance of abiding by speed limits. A good idea I thought as all too often cars are travelling too fast in built up areas.

I didn't take it that way at all. I would suggest it was to help illustrate / teach the children something - instead of sitting in a classroom with a man in uniform blabbing on about the dangers of the road, where attention span of some 9 year olds may be limited on such a subject. They were helping operating the camera as well.

And yes I am special . But I guess others doing 50 got a chocolate too.

Although it shouldn't be needed a little reward for abiding by the speed limit can't hurt,and surely it makes for better relations between police and public rather than just getting ticketed for being even one or two m.p.h.overthe limit.

Indeed. It was the bashful 9 year old girl that gave the chocolate - not the policeman! And yes, one doesn't need it, but it does show the younger generation the rights and wrongs

it's the bit of the carrot and stick approach that is often overlooked really isn't it.....   the carrot......   all we normally get in this country is stick......

  Nice for the little girl but maybe it would have been better (tongue in cheek) if her parent/s had been there too cos the message now seems to be that kids cannot trust anyone with fame, authority or a bit of power.....as the Savile affair displays all too clearly...and when you see the names now being pulled into it.
  Even nicer to see that the usual big clamp down to satisfy the authority's Xmas season figures for doing the motorist hasn't yet began.........But it will.
Just another thought in retrospect........but have all of those adults in whatever job they perform been checked thoroughly by the CRB? I wonder because some positions are automatically taken as being 'safe to be involved with children'. Surely for their safety anyone working or being alone with them should be checked intensly every year at whatever the cost.......in fact I think that if they choose the occupation then it should be at their own expense too. My wife has to pay hers, I had to pay mine, as do many others, so why are there any exceptions? It is, after all, the taxes of the general public who foot the bill.
