Dropped Brake Disk
« on: 30 November 2012, 20:47:55 »

I have a new set of rear disks for the MV6.

Like an absolute plank, I dropped one, onto a concrete surface, from about waist height, whilst moving them.

Visually looks fine... but... have I weakened it? would you use, or, prefer to get a new one to sleep at night? After all, it's brakes..

Opinions welcome... :y

Being rears I'd probably stick it on :-\ :-\

If it was a front I would be a little more reluctant, but only because I sometimes like to "Use" the brakes :-X ::)

TBH, I doubt it's weakened it but that's just my opinion ;)

Stick it the car  ;) ;) Doubt you've even slightly damaged it from that height.

Agreed. Think you'd need to give it a lot sharper blow than that to cause any damage.

If you ever saw how castings get thrown around in a foundry you probably wouldnt be worrying about it. ;)

The stress you caused the disc when dropping it is nothing when compared to the stress created when you are braking, it will be fine.

hold t up and belt it a few times on outside with rubber mallet, to ensure no fractures.

Tap them both lightly with a hammer, if the tapping produces a different tone between the two discs then the one you've dropped is cracked!

I think it's unlikely though!  :)

Good idea. Not cracked will probably ring like a bell, cracked will be a dull thud.Used to test hard iron grinding plates with that method many years ago and it never failed. Rendered the relatively expensive crack testing kit redundant. :y

Of course, if it shatters when you tap it, you might want to buy another one ::)
