Short term SORN or not?

Money`s a bit tight here at Debs.` towers `till late next week and my 'road tax' is due tomorrow.....I`ll not be using the car until I can afford to re-tax it, but wondered if I have to 'SORN' immediately to avoid an automatic fine?
I guess I`m asking: how long I have to renew following RFL expiration before the £80 (?) penalty is issued.  :-/

SORN it .

you can do it on line and it only take a couple of minutes...  

why take any risks?

it makes no odds once you tax it.  

but it keeps you one step ahead of the DamnedViciousLibertyAbuse  crowd.

If you don't SORN it you will have to pay the back-dated road tax when you do put it back on the road so you will gain nothing. I'd SORN it. IIRC, you can do it on line, and can tax it again on line when you need to so it's not a hassle. Make sure you get written confirmation from them in case the snakes start chasing you claiming you didn't SORN though!

Thanks for the sound-advice chaps; I didn`t realise that the SORN could be so easily done online.....I`ll be able to afford to tax it next week, but TBH`had no intention of using the car untaxed: just didn`t want to get an automatic penalty for being poor.  ;)

im pretty sure the proceedings start after 28 days,if the car is not either taxed or sorn,d.might get a more definitive answer from hotel 21. :y

Dunno the timescales.  I wuld SORN online and retax back to the end of the month when the cash is there.  If it happens that it sits for a month without turning a wheel then, when you retax it, the tax will start from the 1st of the month within which you tax it.

...And on that i tried to sorn my omega today in the DVLA office.

At the same time i also submitted a form to transfer my cherished number from the MV6 to the Cat.

Been told i cant do this as the cherished plate must come from a car thats taxed and go to a car thats taxed. If i SORN the omega I lose my plate.

DVLA - Swines and money grabbers  >:(

Markie - the worst that should happen is the loss of a months vel.

If the car is sorn'd it will retain whichever late is on it.

If you want to t/fer plate from it to the jag you need only tax it for 6 months, transfer plate then sorn after transfer done.

Its only 'cos you are on the last day of the month - had it been a few weeks ago then there would have been no difficulty, if I understand things correctly.  The jag would still require to be taxed for the plate to be transferred onto, either way....

Yep think your right Brucie.......bizzarly the chap in the DVLA office cheerily advised i could SORN today and not lose that other months tax (£15) if i put the plate on retention instead of transferring it directly.....

Then he mentioned that this option was £25 dearer to start with  :-/ ::)

I thought the DVLA was pretty hot on dishing out fines, even if the car is nowhere near the road.  So not worth risking - but then sounds like you have come to that conclusion already Debs!

Post office still give out tax disks for the same month until about the 14th/15th, after that they revert to the next months disks.

Done it a coupld of times on my vectra due to exercises, a low subaltern wage and what not, no fines
