Is it worth it? House price question
« on: 01 December 2012, 20:39:54 »

My next door neighbour's house is up for sale.

Do you think it is worth it?

What do you think about house prices generally?

Would want more than a town house (terace) for my £1,000,000 - would want some land, indoor pool, home cinema, extensive garaging etc.

I am a Londoner - who wants to live there now?

Whatever the product is it is only worth what the market dictates based on supply and demand.

That house is very good, plus it is in London, and a part of London that can now dictate prices in the region of £1.5 million.  Would I pay it? Yes I would, if I had to live in London, and more importantly if I had that type of money at my disposal! ::) :P ;D

As a marker of how prices have faired in South London, an area I know well, my late father-in-law lived in a council 3 bedroom terraced house, on a typical 1920s housing estate for 30 years.  When the chance came in the 1980s to buy it he did for £6,000.  A few years later his wife died and he decided to sell - for around £68,000.  Now, to buy one of those houses you need £220,000+!!

Once more the market has dictated values. ;)

I do not get how people can afford those prices, just down road from me houses go for that money.

I maxed out at what I could afford, my flat was on the market for 215k when I bought it.

I think of myself as on decent money for my age, so how on earth people pay for these big houses in London I don't know.

I want a house next, but we will be looking outside London.

My daughter currently pays £1000 pcm to rent a room and have shared use of kitchen bathroom etc in London.  :o
Apparently its ok though as its in a really fashionable area and Kiera Knightley lives nearby and has actually passed her in the street a few times. ::) ;D

About the same price as a Beach Hut in Cornwall, or a Parking Space in Central London, or indeed a whole Village in North Yorkshire.

There isn't a house in the world worth that kind of money..... unless you have one of those jobs where your wage is built up from the misery of others.

I'd bet my last tenner that most Lottery Winners would class London as a place they definitely wouldn't live.  Shit hole it is.
