As referred to in an earlier thread of mine,I went down[up?] to my daughters yesterday. An early start was needed to pick up my eldest daughter and her two kids[son-in-law works on Sundays]and then it was off to Woolich.185miles from eldest daughters to youngest daughters.Alarge part of the day then spent surrounded by my two daughters, one son-in-law and five grandkids, then off for the return journey.I loved every minute of it!A 6 a.m. start saw us cover a total of 450miles in total and land back at home after dropping off eldest daughter and kids at 11.50 p.m.Jaguar as expected did the trip with no fuss or drama and averaged 26.8m.p.g.so I'm pretty happy with that too.

If that is Woolwich, London, and you were travelling from North Lincolnshire, then you where travelling "Up" to London, in true railway parlance.  Tradition rules you always go "Up" towards London, and "Down" when going away from London. :y :y

No, since the age of the train starting it has been "up" when going towards London, and "down" when going away from it, no matter where in the country you are coming from, going to ;)

Hence the phrases "down fast train" / "up fast train" :y

You're lucky to get 22mpg out of an XJR, even on a long run.  Hence the rather urgent LPG project of mine  ;D

I was always told  that you went "up" to the capital,it just sounds wrong when for the rest of the time I would be termed as going "down"south!!Sadly I don't have an XJR,mine is the lowly 3.2 litre  sport,as a 1995 car it's what's termed the X300 with the AJ16 straight six motor. As an aside,in all that travel-admittedly a lot of it in the dark-I only saw 2 Migs. The first on the way there was just south of Peterborough and was a 2.2 diesel estate in a blue/green,the second on the way back-can't recall how far north-was a silver saloon which I think was a m/f/l,only reason I noticed that one was because of it over taking us.

Agreed thats why I got an XJ6 (X350 all Aluminium body) - did a 350 mile round trip the other Sunday, mainly motorway, but with some A & B roads, average overall speed 69mph, fuel 29.7 mpg - well chuffed
