Engine management light 51 reg 3.2
« on: 03 December 2012, 22:03:40 »

Evening all,the em light came on today while driving,I've just done the pedal trick and it looks like a 10 3 2 10 to me?

Now I've had a leaky rocker gasket for a while now and I'm going to change it at the weekend because it stinks now and looks like I've got a fire going on under the bonnet when I wait at the lights, could this light and fault code be linked because of a miss fire ect, boot that I have noticed one.

Thanks for any advice anyone can give

My cam cover seals failed this year at 104k. I replaced the seals with genuine GM parts, using the guides on OOF, and all is fine now. I didn't have any of the other symptoms you describe. I guess you will replace the seals anyway and then see if you have any remaining issues and fault codes? It is worth checking your cam covers whilst off for any splits/cracks/warping (just in case) and do ensure each of the 'o' ring bolt seals are in place/replaced before refitting the covers. One 'o' ring seal was missing from mine, I'll have to blame the dealer for that because they were the only ones in there since new doing a guarantee repair.

Missfire could be caused by oil leak if oil is seeping in around coil pack. The oil level can rise high enough to prevent sparking of plug.

Ok,so I've borrowed a code reader and pluged it in this morning and the only code that comes up is P0420 which from looking in the book the reader came with is Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

The morning after the EML came on I had a bit of the wadding hanging out of the back box so I need a new back box and I am now assuming that this is why I have the P0420 code?

The P0420 is because the pre-CATs have lost efficiency - they all do, especially the 3.2 (which seems worse than the 2.6, based on anecdotal evidence here).  The most cost effective fix is to move the second pair of Lambda sensors behind the main CATs, which will still be working just fine (or you wouldn't pass an MOT) - or ignore the light..

The hair coming out means the wadding inside your back box (or centre silencer) is falling out - which may be exacerbating the problem (i.e. your preCATs might just be borderline enough to not trip the fault code if the back box etc isn't clogged) but isn't 'really' the root cause.

It will come back on for sure, use premium fuel to help. Otherwise its a simple job to complete. Same thing happen to mine on both banks, the light stayed off for about 200 miles once the code was reset, but would eventually come back on.... Just move the sensors, job done, no more light. Leaving the light on all the time can hide other problems too........
