C/H boiler has gone tit's up, again.
« on: 10 December 2012, 17:50:45 »

Power is reaching the unit and the power light is on.

The pump is working and I can hear the water moving, but the boiler makes absolutely no attempt at ignition....zero.....zilch.....nowt. :-\

The boiler is made by Wallstar and runs on oil. Quite frankly it's never been reliable. In summary, it's a bag of shite. :-\

Any ideas, chaps?.

Had problems here recently, was low pressure.

Does yours have a pressure gauge?

No, Mr Tunnie. I believe that the Wallstar range of boiler was last updated in 1789.

Ohhhh  ;D  ;D ;D ;D

I know nothing about boiler systems, mine is combi, but sure standard systems also require good pressure?  :-\

Mine was all lit up, but would not spark up either

May have gone into "lockout" mode. Have you pressed the re-set button?

Oil fired boilers, Mr Tunnie, are nothing like your system.

IME (limited with oil), either the oil flow has stopped (rust bloking?) or the spray arm s are clogged.

The things are so barbarically simple, there's sod all else to go wrong.

Unless its that old......thats its either cant get the parts or not worth fixing it, which happened to mate of mine living out in the sticks. He had several 'oil experts' look at it who all told him they couldnt get the parts to fix it. He was getting quotes of about £5k for a replacement boiler, in the end he spent 8k on oil fired range thingy, that does the cooker bit and the central heating and ditched both the old boiler and leccy cooker.

Thanks, Rob. The button turns red ( in the box outside the house) when this happens. At the moment it's as it should be (white) :y.

Yes. I have run it out of oil in the past, but even then it tries to ignite, which it is not currently doing. :-[

we had oil boiler at last house in uk, brilliant! very cheap BUT!!!
every year had to change the filter from the tank (blocks with water!)and the nozzle on the boiler itself, they wear out very quickly other than that had it serviced every 2years and never a problem,it was manufactured in 1985 :D

Do you have a Service/Owners Manual with the Boiler Opti?
I'm not familiar with this particular make, but if no ignition sequence you should check the photocell which is a failsafe device that checks the flame for correct burn characteristics, it can become patially or fully blocked by soot/dirt and then interrupts the ignition circuit.
edit: Also after perusing a few Forums on the subject including the link supplied by Cem, it seems the oil pump is a likely culprit!

You may have something here, Phil. I'd forgotten about this little johnny. Last time I cleaned the lens with a dab of white spirit. I'll take a look tomorrow when it's light. :y
