Yep.Its still a surpirse to me that he made that speeech tbh.Nothing to do with how true or otherwise his predictions were, but it should have been obvious to him that his career was finished the minute the words came out of his mouth.
He was an extremely intelligent man, almost scarily so.He was on a different level intellectualy to almost all of his peers, and may well have been a future PM until that night. If he had worded it differently, his future and indeed the future of the country might just have been quite different ? Difficult to tell really.
The sad thing was that the NF type thugs latched onto some of his words and made hime their hero, and gave right wing politics a bad name which lasts to this day.
I have read that he was not at all a racist. He lived in Africa in his younger days, and loved the place and its people. He was reported to have wept, when he saw footage of South African police attacking black South Africans.
He was certainly an enigmatic character, but I loved to listen to him speak, just for the pleasure of hearing the great use of the language and see the intelligence in those piercing eyes, even when he was a very old man.
He hwas 100% right about Europe though. It was as though he could see into the future.
