My father talked about when he joined the Royal Navy in 1940, and as part of their training at HMS Ganges they had to "dress the mast".

They apparently wanted him to be the boy who stood on the button, the very top of the mast.  He politely refused as he hated heights, and they allowed him to go to a lower position, with another boy only too keen to man the button. :y
