A good point to start is actually with talking to all the elderly members of your family.

Both sides of my family have interesting stories to tell.

Then once you have done that and documented itthen the real legwork begins.!

Albitz. Shame on you for not visiting your aunt. When she is dead it will be too late.

I didnt particularily like the woman when I was growing up,and dont see any reason why I should go out of my way to visit her just because she happened to be born to the same mother as my mother. As you might have guessed Im not really into the whole family thing, apart from my immediate family. ;)

My girlfriend's mom uses ancestry.com and findmypast.co.uk (although she thinks ancestry.com is better) to do extensive research into their family tree.. but, by the sound of it, it is a very labour and time intensive thing - not a case of signing up and everything being there for you; there's contacting people, searching, adding information, and so on, and apparently it's only really viable if you're willing to pay for the premium services.

I have a cousin who did our family tree and so far has traced it back to the early 18th century!  8)

There dos'nt seem to be anyone of note in our family and mostly seem to have lived in the West Dorset/East Devon area and were mostly farmers and tradesmen. Although in about the 1840's there was a girl born in Wigan, even though earlier and later children were born in Darzet!  :-\  So there must have been a brief foray Ooop Norf for one adventurous lot!!  :)

You can buy a number of credits but it is disproportionately expensive and you will find you need to spend more. You have to make a decision as to whether you are serious about deleving into this and remember you can do as many family tree investigations as you like once you are an annual subscriber. For the UK only searches it may cost about £7 or 8 a month - looked at that way it may not be so bad but you have to use it!! You will find family info centred around the census records 1841 to 1911 great - going back further needs more time and searching all sorts of other records means you would use up credits very quickly as you hit blind allies etc

From my Mothers side, London with Irish descendants, Fathers Side is Transylvanian but German National, His parents where Austrian and Hungarian, Step Father was Australian, Step Mothers is French, Half Brother was born in Moscow but now reside in Brussels.

Think the best Site for my research any further could be 'confused.com'
