Calling all fat bastards
« on: 10 January 2013, 11:13:42 »

On the news now. How we throw about 30% of the food we buy in the bin, which is bad for the planet and a terrible waste of money.
You need to phone in and tell them that you are doing your bit to save the earth and, if anyone is thinking of chucking a chicken tikka massala, you will take it off their hands. :y

I thought that was a very interesting article.

I already knew about stupid folk buying too much and then dumping it when it reached its sell by date. What staggered me was the waste before stuff is actually bought by punters in a supermarket. Ugly shaped food binned as unfit for sale to fussy housewives, stuff wasted in poor supply chains and so on.

It is a crying shame that meat products are binned when you realise just how much food (e.g.grain) and energy goes into producing the stuff.

The world will have to change if it is going to feed the estimated 9.5 billion souls by the year 2050 or 2090 (can't remember which).

It doesn't show up those saying that austerity is biting very well either unless it is just well off folk who waste stuff.

At the side of my house are thousands of acres of forestry commission, crown estate land and it contains some interesting mountain bike routes - we could meet up near to Royal Berks Raquets club but the Council always looking to sell bike permits.

A mate of mine is/was secretary of Berks on Bikes and he is pretty good for setting routes for various levels of ability - in my case the fat bastards thread is also relevant but I did use to use my bike a lot in these woods - Crowthorne Woods - which I did a lot to protect from gravel extraction 20 years ago. A long story that is - we had 2 groups - RAGE  Residents Against Gravel Extraction. And Farts - Footpaths and Rural Trails Society!!!

You should see the waste at our place. It's either wasted before it gets into the can, or wasted after it's canned because one of the other cans in the pack has been damaged .... the lot goes into the skip. Or when packing 24 cans & there's only 22 left on the line, again, they all go in the skip. All perfectly OK cans ... binned.
