AR35 Gearbox issue
« on: 21 January 2013, 18:25:52 »

Hey all this is probably a long shot, but would anybody happen to know the size of the o-ring on the end of the input shaft that joins with the torque  converter, mine has frozen and split in the cold weather,  >:(  If anyone knows the answer to this ill be eternally greatfull.

Many thanks
Mike

Problem is the gearbox is still in car, i wanted to get all bits before removing it, need to get this sorted as last time this happened it dumped all trans fluid and cost me a replacement box from Albitz, id rather not do this again as you can imagine.

no probs mate its possibly my own fault, i didnt replace the o-ring when i replaced the box  :(, its been perfect up till last week when we got down to -14C last week, then dumped trans oil on floor when i started it to warm through before work, been leaking since, so rather than wreck another box ive been walking to work  :'(.

Get one from Vx mate then you're sure you've got the correct size.  I got mine from Vx when I swapped gearboxes - its only pene and in my case off the shelf :y

I thought this seal was a proper oil seal with a metal frame around it that bolts onto the gearbox pump housing? At any rate, that's the seal that would result in external leakage, as it's the final seal between gearbox and torque converter nose. :-\

From memory there is a "bolted on" seal as Kevin describes, but seem to remember an o-ring further down shaft.

There is - but this doesn't act as a seal for the ATF..

If it's shagged more than one box / seal - is there any scoring on the nose of the T/Converter?

when the gearbox was fitted was it done with converter or was just the box removed?,if the latter its very easy to damage the seals when re-fitting the box, converter should be mounted on gearbox then the whole lot fitted together :y
