Urgent help - ignition barrel won't go back together
« on: 24 January 2013, 13:49:12 »

Had a day off work so decided to deal with the occasionally sticking ignition barrel. Printed off the help guide, took it all apart fine, cleaned it and dealt with any issues and came to put it all back together again. The key goes in and out no problem. The issue is that the stop off pin is the wrong side of the stop off block, ie lined up with the channel, the lock is then locked and so I can't rotate it to get it the other side. If I take the pin out and try to realign it, I can't get it to the point where you can pop the pin in without the lock locking.

By the way, is the stop off pin sprung, if so, despite taking every care, it's done a ping ping f**k it without me even noticing.

This is my everyday car, so I'm in a bit of a spin.

Thanks

Anthony

Ignore the bit about the spring, I've just found it in the bottom of the washing pot.

er, no.
It just means I've not lost any bits of the lock.
I can put the pin in but the lock will not then turn anticlockwise in the barrel to put the pin the right side of the stop off block. I have to withdraw it from the barrel most of the way to turn it, but then the pin won't go in.

From memory there is a sprung 'flap' that hinges from the top of the main outer body of the barrel, often the spring falls out unnoticed and the flap falls down stopping the mechanism from working...

The metal flap on top that acts as the barrel lock into the main assembly on the column?  If so it is springing up and down fine but thanks for the suggestion.

Are you sure the ignition switch i.e black switch at the bottom is at the right position to accept the barrel? been there, tried to force it and broke it!

Wish I'd got that far. I can't get the lock properly into the barrel. I deliberately turned the steering wheel a 1/2 turn anticlockwise to ensure the steering lock wouldn't engage during the process.

Looks like I might have to take it to my friendlyhttp://images.omegaowners.com/forum/smf2000/Smileys/oofstd/rolleyes.gif vauxhall dealer to get them to put it back together.

Putting the lock back together again has proved not to be a reversal of the process for taking it apart. I'd already sussed that a thin blade is needed to depress the latch at the keyhole end followed by a press, and a slight wiggle of the lock clockwise to get it to properly engage in the slot and then it rotates a half turn clockwise fine. It just keeps locking out at the extent of that turn so that, when you drop the pin in, it won't turn back again.

All now sorted courtesy of my local vauxhall dealer, although it still took 5 technicians and nearly an hour for them. They kindly didn't charge me full whack for it as it "really shouldn't have been that difficult". They were however unwilling to impart the vital piece of information from the one guy who did work it out so sadly I can't pass it on.

Anyway the lock assembly feels much better now it's been re-greased and de-burred and still a lot cheaper than a new lock.

And they charged me about half that. Just wish I knew how they did it.
