Buying a tablet - on line vs store
« on: 27 January 2013, 12:06:48 »

Am looking to buy myself a tablet for general surfing.

What are the key differences between buying the same device from a retailer in person and online?

I'm thinking in particular about being able to return it if it doesn't suit - and understand that this may be easier if done on line?

Any comments please.

Thanks

Once opened and used, you have no rights to return.

Distance selling regs do not apply to software products. Being a combined hardware/software product, once the seal is broken, thats it, as its no longer in saleable condition.

You cant as TB said. Only returnable if the seal isn't broken.

If you want to have a play, walk into a store and try it out. And if you like it then buy it from there. Tablets are a personal choice, so I cannot see buying online being a sensible option.

on amazon you have 30 days to play with anything as long as you request the return before the 30 days are up.

Sorry but "doesn't suit" is not generally regarded as reason for return or refund, online or in-store.  ???

"Defective" ot "faulty" is a reason for return or refund  :(

So the answer is to try and make sure "it suits" before buying, and you're more likely to do this in store and hands-on, even if you then decide to buy the same thing online, plus surf the net and try and get as much info as possible before purchase.   :y

Which is what puts businesses into administration. Something I would never do. If someone can open a shop for me to go and look at something, it is worth the premium to buy from them.

Edit: Not a dig at anyone, just my observation.

I agree. Imagine the number of used tablets floating about if people felt it didn't "suit them".  :o

Or mobile phones, or cars or dishwashers or washing machines.

I agree completely. But it IS what people do in order to save a few quid.

AND . . . is it often not that the money saved actually matters, it is just the principle of getting something a bit cheaper.

I don't understand how you can buy stuff online cheap, then reserve and collect at the store. ???

My friend went to PC world to get something, and they wanted a certain price...he refused and went home, ordered online, went back to the store and collected the same item but well cheaper. (fuel costs etc did not come into it with money saved). Even the bloke in store told him to do that !!!!!
The mind boggles :o

They want their cake and eat it. ;)

Impulse buyers will still wander into the store and pay over the odds for shiny things they absolutely have to have now.

Online buyers and those who shop around will see competitive prices on the internet so they have some of that market there too. After all, if they put shop prices online nobody would even consider buying online as the competition is so much stiffer there.

I think it's a pretty good model, as you can buy at online prices without having your purchase kicked about by some retard from Parcel Farce, Shittylink, UPS, etc. Whether the shops will still cover their costs on the premium paid by those who don't check the online price remains to be seen... PC world shops seem to be getting a bit bare these days so it does make me wonder if they are about to go pop too...  :-\
