NOT for Cem!
« on: 29 January 2013, 17:43:37 »

Cats are one of the top threats to US wildlife, killing billions of animals each year, a study suggests.

The authors estimate they are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually.

Writing in Nature Communications, the scientists said stray and feral cats were the worst offenders.

However, they added that pet cats also played a role and that owners should do more to reduce their impact.

Perhaps we should leave the animal kingdom to be what it is, and stop interfering. Survival of the fittest and evolution and all that.......
We, as humans, seem intend on changing the course of evolution ...... for what I am not sure

The nature presenter chris packham said something along these many years ago. Strangely he was not on TV for many years after that. He has only recently been back on TV

And if I see chris packham on fire I would not wee on him and his type.

Jesus christ,it's the same old same old ::)what about the effects of humans on wildlife and more importantly the world wide enviroment,example..take a look at the changes in weather patterns, that has an untold impact on all forms of life including humans.I for one am sick of these axe grinders who want their fifteen minutes of fame but don't engage their brain before opening their mouths.I do my bit for the local wild life by making sure that the birds are fed on a daily basis and I've even been feeding a fox for the last two years, and by doing that it does'nt pull all the rubbish out when the bins are out for collection.
I've got a couple of cats and yes occasionally you do get the odd mouse or bird, but the older cat goes for rats and the odd squirrel, which although I would prefer that it did'nt kill anything they are both classed as pests and are killed by who? yupp!humans. Also where did the feral cats come from...DURR... now let me think... ermm humans ???

We didn't! Cats (apart from one wild species in Scotland) are not native to the UK, or indeed Western Europe, so it was only the domestication of wild cats (by HUMANS!) in the Middle East and parts of Asia which started the spread of the pet cat throughout the world. So, we "interfered" from the start!

I'm not a great lover of cats, but I can tolerate them quite happily. However, I do like to see responsible cat ownership - specifically the wearing of a bell to give wild birds a fighting chance. I have seen domestic cats take baby wrens and robins and, as I am keen on birds (who else would build a blue-tit box c/w with cctv!) I am not overly impressed. ;)

While were on the subject, let's remind ourselves about the use of pesticides by our so called custodians of the countryside, which apart from wiping out large numbers of insects, the ones that are'nt  killed the birds etc eat and feed their young and in turn they suffer the effects of these so called 'safe' compounds. We also ingest these chemicals  in our non organic food so it filters all the way down the food chain,so perhaps could I suggest a little perspective here and shift a large part of the blame on too  the human race! Cem made the point in one sentence ::)
