It's nothing new.  I can remember as a small child in the 1970's visiting a Great Aunt in Leytonstone in East London and she was complaining about all the black people moving onto her street and that soon she'd be the only 'local' in the area.

Is it wrong? Is it right? To be honest I don't know and short of manning the barricades, I'm not sure there's an answer either.  :-\

The irony is that the author of the article is planning to migrate somewhere else herself...  ::)

A woman who has lived in Acton has written an article in the DT today on how the area has changed. What do you think of this?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/9831912/I-feel-like-a-stranger-where-I-live.html

Yes, I saw this. A fairly brave article I thought, but at least it was not in the Daily Mail  ;)

Generally I can see what she was saying. I live in North London, and where I am we have a high ethnic mix, but due to the mix there is no one dominant culture. My son however lives in East London in an area that is exactly as she describes. A white Christian Anglo Saxon is very much in the minority and is almost treated as an unwanted minority.

It certainly is not new, and is on record that with the Great Fire of London in 1666 the Dutch immigrants, who had taken over a small sector of the eastern suburbs, were blamed for causing it as an act of terrorism.  All untrue, but it reflected how even then Londoners hated foreigners! This was continued over the decades, and again can be noted with the Battle of Cable Street in 1936.

In Britain, Sir Oswald Mosley's Blackshirted British Union of Fascists (BUF) portrayed Jewish people as the cause of the country's problems, just as of course fascism was gaining ground across Europe. East London had the largest Jewish population in Britain and Mosley capitalised on that fact.

Then you have the 1958 riots by "teddy boys" against the Caribbean migrants who were occupying Notting Hill , as well as other areas of London. So yes, it was not only the 1970's, and personally I remember the late 1950's and my grandparents reaction to "blacks" appearing on the streets of London.

Nothing is new! ::) ::) ::)

It is new,at least in modern times. In the last decade there has been a huge influx, particularily in to London and the surrounding area.In particular,in east London there has been strong growth in seperatist Muslims, who are turning parts of it into a ghetto, where indiginous people are told to leave the area,if their appearance or behaviour doent fit with the sharia mindset (as recently seen on TV news).Drive down mile end/whitechapel road and it really is like being in a foreign country, complete with the wailing calling the faithful to prayer from the enormous Mosque.
It isnt mullticulturalism, its the existing culture being swamped. Its gone too far imo.

In the USA, hispanics will account for over 50% of the population by 2050.

But Albitz what seems new now is actually not, even in modern times.  First the Romans came in and created Londinium for the Brits in ancient times, and right up to now there have been large influxes of other nationalities on a regular basis.  It just happens to be Eastern Europeans now along with Islamic peoples.  London will cope as it always has.  London you could say was created by immigrants - including Scots and the Welsh - and is still growing with them.

Never forget during WW2 many nationalities fled mainland Europe and further afield. We welcomed them to join the fight, and it was especially the Poles and Free French, along with others, who fought hard against the Nazis.

If people now come to Great Britain of their own free will to become, maybe two or more generations down the line, true British citizens to join the majority of us who are ex-immigrants over hundreds of years, so be it!

We, the British, took over many of their countries and lived there, and now they want to be with us again! :D :D :D :D ;) :y :y :y

PS Also get used to the fact that we are all now a global people who go to other countries like our forebears used to go to towns or cities in their county.  The modern world (and transport!!) has created this. :y

I have to disagree with you Lizzie as in the past immigration has been a small percentage of our population which we have easily absorbed into our traditional way of life.

In the 1950's under the Conservatives began mass migration and under Labour this was accelerated to where we are now. In several cities in the UK the English are now the minority and there are many ethnic clashes on a regular bases. Particularly between different the cultures of different countries. We are not a cohesive society with a common history and sense of values any longer. Viewing the crowds for the the Queen's diamond Jubilee or remembrance Sunday is always interesting to see who support British institutions and traditions.

The English way of life is largely dead and that is reflected is all parts of society. From political corruption to driving standards. Pockets still exist, the villages of South Oxfordshire are and example, but the English as a people in England will be the minority by 2066 at the latest. With current levels of immigration and emigration of mainly English professional people to other countries, probably well before that.

I have friends from ethnic minorities and they are also very uncomfortable with what has happened as they want a peaceful life and can see troubles in the future.

If we extended mass migration and multiculturalism to all countries, then what would be the point in visiting them as the miss-mash of people would all be the same, a bit like ghastly modern shopping centres full of multiple retailers!

The good news from my point of view is that the Ukraine is a mono cultural society that is largely closed to outsiders. If you aren't related or married to a Ukrainian then you can't live their permanently. I will be part of a small minority as there only only about 1000 English settled in the Ukraine and probably about the same temporally working there. I personally like the social cohesiveness of their mono-cultural society.
