What to look out for when buying
« on: 30 January 2013, 00:13:36 »

Hello all. I'm after an omega as a daily driver to and from work and for general running around in. I've spotted a decent, (looks ok anyway), facelift estate 2.6 auto. What are the main things to look out for?.

It's an estate, so it'll be/about to be rusty around the rear wiper!  ;)

Autoboxes should be smooth in changing gear, no delays clunks etc

Oil/mayo in header tank = failed oil cooler due to lack of coolant changes.Quite expensive to fix if you dont DIY.

wishbone bushes and drop links, inside tyre wear.

rear air shocks if an elite, can be replced with non air shocks (cheaper)

and although OE rocker cover gaskets might seem to be expensive, they're cheaper in the long run than pattern - pattern gaskets go hard & just don't last, see andyc at Drive.  :y

I haven't, it came in use when transporting 400kg of tiles in my boot and back seats! And I get to embellish the s/l suspension somewhat by telling people the suspension is constantly measured and adjusted, according to conditions, which it is!

For a daily driver, he might want to lose the s/l if shot.

It's all kinda what I had in my mind to look out for. It seems that people just don't want big cars anymore and omegas seem to be a great deal of car for the money at the moment. Of course, it's an old car. So I expect a few niggles. And so far seems so good. I'm not after perfection, but just an honest reliable daily runner.
