I have seen a few threads on peoples changes in the line of work due to current economic changes.

Some total changes of career and some adjustments.

Housing market= shagged . Hgv repair = shagged. car repair doesnt seem that great. Any other bright ideas??

Tried a few others i wont mention

I currently work for a ''large'' building society. Have been there 11 years this coming June. I couldn't hack much longer doing this job, watching my life ebb away slowly in a puddle of misery.

So. I thought 'can i make a career out of doing what i enjoy'?

Well, I'm not good enough, rich enough or arrogant enough to become a pro poker player. So i went to college to learn about cars.

only last week i signed up for an agency who are looking to get me work experience during my studies/part time work.

Hopefully, all things going well i'll be in a garage in june/july.

and if that goes pear shaped i'm not changing career again

Over almost 40 years since I left school I doubt if many have had so many changes, as in the early years, of potential careers as I have, never in those early years did I expect to be doing what I do now....

I took a shot at answering the phones on reception the other day.
Our voluptuous blonde with the husky voice, decided shopping for shoes or shampoo or what ever women do at lunch times, meant she was going to be late back. Anyway long story short she can keep that ruddy job. I was putting calls thru left right & centre.Ttranferring calls, taking notes, numbers to call back......... miserable buggers calling in & out + a very irrate scottish bloke speaking a foreign language.   How the hell she does that job 5 days a week is a mystery to me.

I have had a few jobs over the years:

Left school at 16.
Apprentice Bricklayer.
Bricklayer.
Roadside Breakdown operative for major breakdown company (won't use correct title).
Technical sort officer for breakdown company.
Technician where I am now. Can't say to much but it is the best job I have ever had, and I cannot see myself changing jobs again.

I don't like the term "career" I am afraid. To me it is a term that has delusions of grandeur. Just my opinion of course.

Used to work all the hours (and back home) in an office earning good money, now work my olive grove in the sun earning no money. Nicer pace of life, own boss, clean air, lovely views, easy commute, no money.

When I was starting out, I was struck by the sheer number of colleagues that reached retirement age , drew their half pay pension and then promptly died.  Right back then I promised myself I wouldn't do the same.

Only had 4 jobs in 44 years .... 6 months driving for the Co-Op, 38 years in the RAF, 3 1/2 years in the Courts, been "retired" for 2 years (if that counts as a job .. feels like it sometimes !!!!!!!! back to work for a rest ?? !!)

So I guess the RAF bit counts as a "career"

I left school at 16 and started working for a tiny (10 person) IT company building & supporting Novell Netware networks, flipped to the software development (Retrieve 4GL) side after a year and a half and stayed there for nearly three years in total, by which time the company had doubled in size.

Moved down south and started work for a software house (Pascal & Visual Basic for my sins!), stayed there for six years.

Worked for myself for a couple of years and then, once the money had run out and I was absolutely destitute and on the verge of losing my house, got a job for a multinational hardware/software vendor supporting their kit (2nd line support), worked my way up to 3rd line support and now work there as a Data Analyst doing internal development, reporting and statistical analysis - been here 6 years now.


I would dearly love a career change to get out of IT but, sadly, nothing pays the same - short of being a doctor, lawyer etc, and I don't think I could hack the multi-year retraining to qualify and start earning good money.



So I'll be stuck in IT until they shovel me into a hole in the ground...
