Difference(s) between early and late 3.2 V6 engines
« on: 08 February 2013, 21:46:22 »

Just out of interest, as there are different timing belt kits for early/late 3.2 engines I wondered if there were any differences between the engines other than the belt tensioners? I couldn't recall anything but thought I'd ask on the off chance. Ta.

Hi Rob. I know there are different belt kits but I wondered if there were differences in the engines themselves other than the tensioners (I'm referring to early and late 3.2 engines only)

only difference was the none ecentric bottom roller fitted to the later engine plus around 2001 they used a dodgy batch of stem seals (different colour) got to change mine this year >:(

Thought this affected 2.6 only?

Hydraulic lifter part numbers are different too between early and late 3.2s, apparently not interchangeable between lumps? ???

late engines use internal torx-headed "capscrews" to hold ram-pipes to plenum divider instead of external type.

The none ecentric bottom roller went to all models, it was intended to reduce the belt noise which is common with this engine but didnt work, you can still fit the ecentric roller- the later tappets had a none return valve fitted - you can swap them to older models aslong as you fit the later T vent which has larger oil hole in it.

the idea of the later improved tappet was to solve the problem of tappet noise on start up - those few seconds of tap you get with the older design - you can identify the different tappets by comparing the underneath view.

you can get tappet bore wear though where even new tappets will not improve the noise - if your old tappets have score marks on the sides even new tappets will not improve the noise level - we put this down to casting sand retained in the head - at one point we went to Cosworth to supply heads - they used the Cosworth process that turned the mould during the casting process which reduced blow holes - unfortunetly they also used a different casting sand - this reduced tool life dramatically on the machining lines plus they couldnt keep up with supply so they were binned!

A very interesting insight. :y

I wonder if the tappet issues have any bearing on Tunnie's 3.2 rattly tappets at hot idle? :-\

Do you know what the difference between the lifters is? And is there a way of modifying the later head(s) to accomodate the early type lifters?  ???

the later tappets had none return valve fitted  - can be retro fitted to early models if the T vents are replaced with the later spec ones
