Still don't understand selling the Omega

I can read the writing on the wall... big engines high emmisions is out, small engine is in...  :(

As I said even if Boris does bin the £25 charge, there is a £400eesh VED to consider, rising cost of petrol, and this is where things are going.... I believe it will be increasingly more difficult to own a large engine vehicle in the UK.

I use to treat the Kompressor engine with contempt, i.e. no replacement for bigger displacement, the V6 (and V8) are much smoother etc etc.

But I learnt to respect it now. I get 143bhp from a 1.8L engine with 179g/Km CO2 emission, this is as low as i am willing to go...

I don't believe in global warming, my old Omega will get scrapped in the not too distant future because it will be too expensive to tax, which is madness because this car has another 10 years in it easily - 50k miles, not a speck of rust, frequent oil changes, cambelt...

I spent over £1000 on it in the past year alone, including front wheel bearings, front disks and pads, 4 new Michelin tyres, etc etc, believe you me I would have kept it if I could. It was by far the best car I ever owned. Sweetest V6 engine, powerful, and well-built. Very roomy and... OK I am getting emotional here...  ;D

But as said big engined cars are on the way our and sadly I have to give in to the law of the land.    :(

I see, however I think even with the punishing taxes another couple of years would have been worth it then sell when it IS to expensive.

You got little, I won't sell do to no value either.

Anyway not laws but 'dangle berries' from the clowns running the country

I once read that it took more energy to build a car than the car would ever use in fuel during its lifetime.  Anyone know if this is true?

That's my excuse for driving an elderly gas-guzzler.  (The real reason, of course, is that it's very comfortable and goes like the clappers.)

Yep. May as well get the value out of the car once you've got it. the value of most Omegas has bottomed out now, thanks in part to the tax / congestion charge situation.

We know that tax, even for post-2001 cars, is not going to get seriously punitive until after 2010. By then I firmly believe the current shower will be on the dole where they belong and who knows what will happen then?

London congestion charge is another matter, of course. I can't really comment on that. I personally would never choose to drive there these days, congestion charge or not.

The problem with traffic is that we are all peasants, required to make way for His Lordship. Only, His Lordship has been replaced these days by government (Local and Central).

Traffic in the morning is hectic. Between 08:00 and 09:00 it grinds to a halt due to people going to work and parents driving their children to school. Yet the council does all it collections, rubbish, recycling, and special collection between 08:00 and 09:00.

This obviously creates major chaos. The rubbish trucks emptying the bins in narrow streets at 08:45 is a serious problem for traffic. The solution? Hey, you, peasants, don’t drive ‘round in your cars dy’hear? What? You dare ignore us? There, £25 tax, this will teach you to be more respectful next time. Out of our way!

Now how about this.... The Government will issue instruction to all central and local government institutes that no government-owned vehicles are allowed on public roads between 08:00 and 09:00, unless absolutely necessary. Collecting rubbish? Start at 09:30. Or at 07:30. But not 08:30. They will have to accommodate us, rather than the other way around.

Dream on, fellow peasants... His Lordship working for us? Surely this can’t be right....  >:(

Sad but true. Bin men are a big enough PITA in Hampshire but if they didn't do the bin rounds at 9AM they might not be able to knock off before gone half 3 in the afternoon.  :o

Can you imagine our bin men collecting rubbish at midnight like they do in Spain (probably because it's a bit warm during the day, admittedly)?

You're right... I don't dare ask for midnight rubbish collections, but 07:00am does not sound unreasonable to me....?

It's not just rubbish. It's also road works, and in particular council ones - surely the road markings can be re-painted at night, say between 12:00-and 06:00am? Shock, horror...

The answer is always tax, tax, and more tax. This government (as all others...) believes in stick-and-carrot, they hit you with both at the same time.

Don't drive your kids to school... don't drive to work... buy a smaller car...
