The current 76/19Mbps service is often nicknamed Infinity 2 ;D

Yeah, because I doubt they'll get 21CN working in the 21st century ;D

One thing that I do understand, or perhaps I don't, is that I expected the Open Reach engineer to replace the copper wire inside my home with fibre optic.  But he said they do not; the fibre optic cable goes as far as the box on the corner of our street, then is copper from there.

He said I would get top speed as though the exchange was alongside my home.

As I say I am pleased with the results, but rather surprised the FO cable is used to replace all the copper.

Any comments? ;)

Yep, the technology is FTTC or 'Fibre to the Cabinet'

Ok. Another one. Why do you need 250v to the cab?

Yup, you have FTTC - Fibre to the Cabinet (green box on corner), then using copper from there to your house. FTTP - Fibre to the Premises - is fibre all the way to house.

With FTTC, it matters not where the serving exchange is (mine isn't my local exchange in Brackley, but Banbury exchange 12 miles away), but the length of cable between the cabinet and your house (and the quality/condition of that cable).

FTTC is a technology where the DSLAM is not in the serving exchange, but in the local street cabinet. The DSLAM requires power.

Also on the take-up of neighbours - the crosstalk interference increases with the number of VDSL circuits within a cable, which reduces SNR, which causes more downsyncs, which the BRASs get to know about, which lowers your IP profile...
