Supposedly picking up a Golf 2.8 4MO later, anyone know if these have cambelts or chains? I thought they were chains, but someone mentioned a cambelt?

Fairly sure it's belt... Possibly 2

Thinking about it, the Passatt 4motion is single belt and you need to take the front off to change it

Its a very compromised design engine.

Its only V'ish' due to the single head low V angle so not as smooth as a V around the 60Deg angle or as silk as a straight six. I ahev seen some with ring wear at higher mileage, no doubt this is also down to the piston angle with respect to the rod direction.

Its also chain driven but, the guides do wear quite badly and changing them is a gearbox out job due to some fool putting them at the flywheel end! (god I hate timing chains!)

Not encountered a chain driven one but the last one I worked on was a 99 model.

Yeh, the bloody chain guides snap!

Direct injection petrol setup can suffer pump issues (not indifferent to the early direct injection 2.2 Vx engines)

They need VERY regular oil changes so check inside the filler cap (if you can see anything)

Depends more on how many total miles, time between services, oil quality etc

I think it's high 90's on the mileage, haven't got the paperwork here with me. Full history too apparently. I think it's VW history, so I doubt it's that good  .

yes, indeed.....it might have had Castrol oil every 20K miles......

Well I've picked it up for peanuts, few issues though, as follows:

1. Heater when on full chat, the amount of air it kicks out goes up and down, it fluctuates.

2. When sitting on idle it gets hot, goes well past the middle mark of the gauge, although that's when sitting idle for a good 10 mins or so. When driving about temp is fine, never goes above the middle mark. I wasn't brave enough to see if the fan kicked in.

3. On a hot start it misfires and dies, unless you give it some revving?

4. When sitting on idle for a little while, and then going for blast it feels very sluggish for about 5 minutes of the journey, until you give it a proper hammering then it goes back to being quick.

All that makes it sound a bad car, but it was cheap and worth money, it's very quick, the arse end comes out to play occasionally, and I could never lose any money on it .
