My fridge has died.....
« on: 23 February 2013, 12:31:19 »

It's old and has served me well, so my first thought was to take to the tip or leave it out for the Rag and Bone men who seem to come round more and more frequently...  ::)

I was having a quick look on ebay for a cheap 2nd hand replacement when I spotted this and others like it...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-fridge-freezer-thermostat-2-compartment-also-larder-fridges-/261038254893?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Kitchen_Fridges_Freezers&hash=item3cc717ab2d

Worth a try?  ???   :-\  Thanks in advance!  :)

IME old (>20 yrs) fridges were much better engineered and built than more recent ones, so may be worth repairing if that sort of vintage.  Guess it depends what's wrong with it.  UKwhitegoods forum was reasonably helpful when I was trying to mend one a while back.  Some right 'characters' on there though. ;D

Too be honest I don't know what the fault is....  :-\

It's still powered up as the light still comes on, but it's not chilling or freezing the icebox.  It started dying intermittently at first but now seems to have died completely....  :-\

Turn it off for about an hour or more, let the gases settle. See if gets cold again when turned on again. If it looses its cooling again then likely a loss of refrigerant, like ac system on the cars. No gas, no cooling.

Worth a try. :)

Ah the old 'Turn it off and on again' trick!  :)  I did move it recently and it's been turned off now for a couple of days, I'll turn it back on and see what happens! Cheers!  :)

Always leave a fridge off for a good hour after moving, to let the gasses settle.

They don't like the jigging about.

Ah didn't know that... and yes I turned it on straight away..  :-[

But it was playing up a bit before I moved it, maybe I hastened it's demise...  ::)

If the motor isn't running, try shorting the switch terminals of the thermostat together and try again. If it runs and gets cool, the thermostat is your problem. If not, it's probably not worth looking any further.

I will give that forum a go.  :y Our fridge overcools stuff regardless of where the thermostat is positioned.
