Exhaust Drone
« on: 25 February 2013, 21:21:10 »

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site so was hoping someone out there could help me with a problem I've got with my 02 reg 2.2l auto petrol estate. The car is genuine low mileage (60,000) and when I bought it it still had the original GM exhaust system which had corroded badly where the two pipes enter the backbox. I've bought a complete genuine GM system from my local Vauxhall dealer (backbox & two pipes). I've fitted the system myself and there are no leaks at all but as soon as the car reaches about 45-50mph it emits the most annoying resonant drone. I,ve had suggestions such as tyre noise or wheel bearings but all seems ok in those departments, it's so annoying it's spoiling my enjoyment of an otherwise good car, help!, I'm at my wits end with this one.

Sadly, the new style GM exhausts are poor quality  :'(

But they don't normally drone like Timax/Bosal shite. So I'm surprised you have a drone thats that annoying

Check that back box pipe clears rear valance - if not that acts as a sound box.  Had that on old Elite - cure buy a cheapo tail pipe extension off ebay :y

Gm systems are now such poor quality that thy are no longer worth the money, i have just fited a system from a firm called klarius, had not heard of them before but i have to say i am quite impressed. seem to be double skinned as well.

Thats a shame QH has gone tits up , but it seems klarius exhaust systems are still on the market, and i have to say it is as good as the GM system i have just replaced.
Had to heat the bolts that join the to the cats as they were rusted solid, only to be expected after 12 years.

I would recommend klarius to anyone needing a system, although not as cheap as Eternal. About £210 for the compleat cat back for a V6 system.

As the boy said GM exhausts aint what they used to be. I had a genuine one fitted by Opel to my old 2.0 as it was on a offer deal. The tin ware seemed very thin causing droning till is was about 3 months old. Since them i have always gone to Speedy tyres just down the road from me in France There a bit like just tyres,Kwik fit in the UK), a little cheaper but the tin seem a lot thicker.

Can't fall off with Eternal. Daz already reckoned mine was one of the quietest 3.2s he'd heard (so said the previous owner on here) - it's whisper quiet to the point you can't always tell it's running at all. Great fit and finish too. :y

Check the rear tail pipe length as some still supply the Preface Design, the pipe needs to extend well past the rear bumper housing on the Facelifts, make more of a racket on the Estates.

got a longlife stainless made up on my steinmetz got a nice bellow when opened up but nice on the motorway infact its nice to have an exhaust note that matches the car if you get my drift.this is a single larger pipe though to rear double exit with one small resonence box full flow ive lost 3 miles to gallon and gained 4 bhp and a smoother spin up,. :y
