Titanic 2
« on: 26 February 2013, 18:38:44 »

According to our local news the multi-billionaire Clive Palmer has announced today that he will go ahead and build a full scale replica of RMS Titanic, which will be named Titanic 2.

The general plan of course was first announced last year, but now it is going ahead.

Our Meridian TV Station that covers Southampton has also reported "unhappiness" amongst relatives that this ship will be built as they believe it is not in keeping with the casualties of the disasters and their memory which is still held dear in the City.

Not sure myself on that one.  I can understand their point of view in part, but what a wonderful memorial this new ship will make.  However we must not forget it is being built for one objective; to make loads of money!! ::) ::)  All done on the back of the memory of the 1,500+ people lost on the morning of 15th April 1912.

Hmm,undecided on this one myself.I've no objection to someone making loads of money, but it seems to me he'll only do it on the back of the fame/notoriety of the original which seems wrong somehow.

I think he's going to have it built in China and not at Harland & Wolff in Belfast though!  :-\  That really would be something if it was built at the original shipyard using the original blueprints!!  :)

Although profit is the motive, jobs will be created and I'm sure it'll be popular!!  :y  Not sure I'd fancy the maiden voyage though!!!  :o

I think it's a marvellous idea.  So the fella is going to make loads of money???? He already has more than any of us will dream of, so not really an issue.

I'm quite sure the likes of me would never be able to afford to step foot on it..... but I'm just thinking how amazing it will be to drive to Southampton, Liverpool or wherever else this epic ship is likely to stop-off and just stare at it for a while.

I just wonder how close to the original it will be...... shouldn't think they will use century year old techniques (or indeed materials) to build it.  :-\

No, it wasn't, but in Southampton there are many who are descendants of the 500 crew who were based in the City and lost to the sea.  Feelings about the disaster are still strong there and will take at least another two generations to finally fade. ;)

Interesting points - I wonder how changes in safety regulations will affect the build, and the finished product!

Are there regulations for emissions of ships, like cars or aircraft?  :-\

Is there enough Coal left in the World?  ;D

It will certainly be better than the monstrosities they build today like floating high rise hotels. :( :(

It will be a nuclear powered luxury liner :y :y :y

Yes and quite stringent to getting tougher in the next few years

It will almost certainly be a diesel engined hybrid with electrical drive, I just hope they don't build it in China as the quality is awful
