2.5 td cutting out help please
« on: 01 March 2013, 19:10:30 »

Driving to a job today ,pulled in to layby to take a phone call ,sat a couple of minutes maybe less and engine stopped ,never done that before ,started again at second attempt, pulled away and felt ok  then did it again so managed to get in a gateway to have a look , starts and runs fine for maybe 30/45 seconds then cuts out aprubtly not like fuel starvation but could be , so got towed home !!
just paperclipped it and am getting..
49    glow device general error
64   fuel quantity  (always had that)
84   immob no signal  (oh dear)
92  cruise control  (not got that )

So any input welcome please !!! I was going to change fuel filter and see if that helped, but do I have an immobiliser issue ???
Just to clarify its a 1998 2.5 td
TIA

Pop to Jimbob, clear out whats in there, so we can see whats old and whats current.

The cruise one will always be there until you put on a cruise stalk.

Is there fuel in the fuel filter? If not, top it up with diesel.

If that doesn't help, follow the bleed procedure (whilst cranking, loosen the nut on top of injector until fuel spurts out, tighten, move on to next). Dont burn out starter motor though...

Best to hook-up a good battery first, and then remove the filler cap. Get someone to sit in the car and turn on the ignition, and (you) listen at the filler neck. You should hear the in-tank pump running for around maybe 30 seconds to a minute-ish, whilst it pressurises the fuel system.

If the in-tank pump is suspect, here's the guide: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90611.0

Though if there is more than a 1/3rd of a tank of fuel, usually the FIP can suck it through even if the tank pump is tired...

True enough TB; but it's highly likely that the fuel system's empty forward of the in-tank pump.
IME the injection pump won't cope thence ... and you really need to 'start at the start' so to speak - Markseth's old TD was an episode that I'll not forget in a hurry! >:(

That car actually needed a new in-tank pump (120 bucks-ish from Vx IIRC), before cleaning out the swirl pot/tank and fitting a new fuel filter.
Still running like a good 'un to date! ;)
