My basic training was done on the Vickers Varsity which had 2 of those, count 9 blades past your nose before setting the magnetos to ignition, to prevent hydraulicing. and on the mag drop check DO NOT get the sequence wrong .... it should be one off one on, two off two on with an rpm drop (max) of 200 each time ... if you cock it up one off two off oh shit put em back on .... there followed a bloody gurt bang as the unburned fuel in the exhaust stubs ignited and blew the stubs off at the shear points.
The skipper would stop taxying and you had to leave the aircraft and pick up said stubs and carry them back to the ground crew as the first part of your penance ..... I just wish that B*******D of an instructor had reminded me they might be a tad warm .... second degree burns of all fingertips meant a medical recourse that put me back 6 weeks - and you didn't get the first pay rise until you passed the course ....
